    ARCADE KINGS #2 (OF 5)

    Artist: Dylan Burnett
Colorist: Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini
    Letterer: AndWorld Design
    Editor: Amanda LaFranco
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $7.99
    Release Date: June 21st, 2023

Previously in Arcade Kings: Meet Joe, the talented son of the renowned fighter McMax. His brother Ken struggled to live up to the family legacy, and now Joe is on a journey to find him while his father sends people to bring him back.

    A CHANGE OF PLANS

Arcade Kings #2 kicks off with Joe arriving in Rockview, a mostly deserted town except for a handful of kids. Here, he encounters Plum Khurana, who holds a grudge against the McMax family for their negative impact on the city. Plum is bullying some kids playing a McMax video game, and Joe steps in to defend them. This leads to a confrontation between Joe and Plum, with Plum initially gaining the upper hand.

However, Minerva, one of McMax’s fighters, interrupts their fight. Minerva manages to defeat both Joe and Plum, but instead of continuing the battle, she surprises everyone by revealing the location of Joe’s brother. She hopes that Joe will return home once he finds Ken. Plum warns Joe that it might be a trap but bids him a heartfelt farewell.

    VISUALLY STUNNING ART

One of the standout features of Arcade Kings #2 is its visually striking and action-packed artwork. Initially, I hesitated due to the comic’s length and my personal fatigue. As I delved deeper into the story, the captivating art and fast-paced action kept me engaged and eager to turn the pages. This issue introduces two strong female characters, Plum and Minerva, who overshadow Joe with their competence. I quickly became fond of these characters and their personalities, despite them fitting certain clichés that the comic embraces. While I would have appreciated more exploration of how the McMax family affected Rockview and Plum’s vendetta against them, I understand that this is a miniseries, and there may not be enough space to delve into every side character’s story.

    BOTTOM LINE: A GREAT READ

Surprisingly, I thoroughly enjoyed Arcade Kings #2. Even in my less-than-ideal mood, picking up this comic lifted my spirits. The comic’s escapism and unique premise make for a highly satisfying read. Considering all this, I give it a rating of 4.5 out of 5. Despite the higher price, I believe it’s worth picking up if you’re intrigued by the premise.
