Previously in Tiger Division: Taegugki’s past actions come back to haunt him when a criminal partner returns to his life. Throughout the series, his backstory and how he got his abilities are slowly revealed. Now his old friend, Min-Jae, has captured him and is using the Psylot Gem and an Amplifier to steal his powers. Luckily Lady Bright is right around the corner.
Tiger Division #4 continues with more banter between Tae and Min-Jae. Lady Bright uses their dialogue to bust in. We get another flashback where Tae commits to being a hero instead of a criminal, saying he felt abandoned by his old criminal partner. Lady Bright fights Min-Jae but is seemingly too late. The rest of the team shows off to fight off Min-Jae’s goons while Tae realizes that he no longer has any powers. To make matters worse, Doctor Doom shows up to claim the power for himself!
This is the first time where the villain monologue annoyed me. If MIn-Jae had gotten on with it, he would have won. Instead, we got a continuation of the conversation from the previous issue, and it messed with the pacing of Tiger Division #4. I am also unconvinced that bringing in Doctor Doom was the right call. It feels out of place and takes us from the Korean hero and villain storyline. But leading up to Doctor Doom interrupting, very little happened. I don’t need to know how Tae became a hero; we already know through context clues. The fight scenes were straightforward and had more to do with talking than anything else. This series is solid, but this issue as a standalone doesn’t work for me.
I love the Tiger Division title, and I understand that as a trade paperback, this issue won’t feel as bad. But Tiger Division #4 is carried by the art despite the weaker writing. With that in mind, this issue is a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
