The X-Treme X-Men reunited to help Shadowcat fight Ogun but caught the attention of the anti-mutant group Purity! Find out if they can appease the crowd in X-Treme X-Men #3 by Marvel Comics!

    X-TREME X-MEN #3 (OF 5)

    Writer: Chris Claremont
    Artist: Salvador Larroca
    Colorist: Guru-eFx
    Letterer: Clayton Cowles
    Editor: Mark Basso
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    Release Date: February 15th, 2023

Previously in X-Treme X-Men: Ogun hid in Shadowcat’s psyche for many years. When he revealed himself, Kitty Pryde cast him out but could not entirely defeat him. Rachel Summers prepares for a psychic battle against Ogun. As the X-Treme X-Men #3 looked for solutions against Ogun, they riled up an anti-mutant protest with their display of powers, and Sage and Bishop were attacked by the Beastybrute!

    A DEADLY GAME

X-Treme X-Men #3 starts with Sanzu lecturing Beastybrute for failing to capture Bishop and Sage. Meanwhile, Shadowcat warns Rachel about Ogun before the two of them fight. Rachel is knocked unconscious, and Shadowcat falls to the ground. Wolverine engages an Ogun-controlled Beastybrute with the help of Gambit while Rogue tries to rescue Rachel. Storm attempts to stop the fight, but Sanzu absorbs some of Rachel Summer’s power and is overwhelmed by the Pheonix Force. Soulscream channels the energy from Sanzu into the world and deactivates the mutant powers of anyone near them!

    A LOT GOING ON

In the previous issue, Chris Claremont did a great job managing all the plotlines within an X-Men title. In X-Treme X-Men #3, I felt a little overwhelmed and struggled to keep track of all the characters. In this particular issue, it felt like some people were standing around. There was an introduction of a new character, Alice, that didn’t seem to add anything to the story. For a central issue, I want to start seeing more questions answered rather than introducing more plot lines. Knowing that only two comics are left of the miniseries, I’m unsure how this will unfold. Much of this has to deal with the aggressive pacing of the action scenes. If there was less action, I could slow down my reading tempo to fully understand what was happening.

X-Treme X-Men #3 gives the artist an excellent opportunity to show off. With all the action, many images of heroes in striking poses and detailed power usages exist. The colors pop off the page, providing a riveting and stunning book of panels. Great work here.

    BOTTOM LINE: VISUALLY STUNNING

This book is excellent because of its art and colors. I enjoyed the small details of tattoos to the prominent display of the Pheonix Force. I wish the story’s pacing was slightly slower to understand the complex thought on an initial read-through. 3.5 out of 5 stars for X-Treme X-Men #3.

    Visually Stunning

X-Treme X-Men #3 was visually captivating, but the art and the action were too much to understand the nuance of the complicated plot thoroughly.
