Previously in Legion of X: A new secondary mutation has started amongst some of the mutants of Krakoa, including one that made Nightcrawler look more monstrous. Nightcrawler, Doctor Nemesis, and Pixie team up with the new Black Knight and track the source to Magali Szardos, Nightcrawler’s adopted mom. Meanwhile, Warlock has been possessed by Nimrod and severs Warlock’s connection to Cypher. Through Warlock, Nimrod has staged an attack that turns some of Krakoa into mindless drones. Lastly, Professor X visits Legion at the Altar.

    A TERRIBLE DAD

Legion of X #10 has three separate plotlines. First, Professor X had a fail-safe installed within his brain. When he entered Legion’s Altar, it triggered, causing it to weaken Legion and devastate his mindscape. Instead of helping, Professor X initially leaves before having second thoughts and returning to help clear the virus. On Krakoa, Lost remembers Forgetmenot and realizes they must get to the island’s center. As the Spirit of Variance, Banshee realizes that as a Ghost Rider, he needs a mount. He uses his power to turn Juggernaut into a flaming vehicle of destruction and breaks through the drone’s Sentinel defenses. The crew realizes that they have to destroy Warlock’s power core. Forgetmenot, who is badly injured, manages to stab Warlock, killing him in the process. Due to his mutant power, no one realizes that he is dead, and they believe a random accident managed to kill Warlock.

Meanwhile, Nightcrawler is attacked by Magali and Orchis with his team down for the count. Magali gives a chance for Nightcrawler to surrender if he submits to the monstrous side, but he tries to refuse while fighting off the Orchis men. Exhausted, he is hurt by Magali and left for capture by Orchis reinforcements. However, Mother Righteous shows up to offer him a deal.

    INFURIATED

I am in an interesting place in my life. I have never really taken much consideration of who Legion was or his relationship with Professor X. Now, as a young parent, I find myself angry at Professor X in Legion of X #10. Because Professor X reminds me of some ideologies I’ve experienced before and what I don’t want to be as a parent. Si Spurrier captured that relationship exceptionally well in the few pages we got of the duo. In fact, I am impressed with the ability to balance so many ideas. This book has a ton of unique thoughts, but I never felt overwhelmed in this issue by the sheer amount of plot going on. In fact, I was surprised I wasn’t reading a double-sized issue when I finished the story. And despite how much action is in the story, I still felt moments of characterization from most of the cast. Even the brief moments of Mother Righteous showed her with a ton of personality. Excellent work here.

The art was also exceptionally well done. Watching Banshee and Juggernaut fuse into this Ghost Rider persona was visually stunning. The magic of Magali and the artistic landscape of Legion’s mind had a drastic impact. Splendid work by the artist but exceptional work by the colorist in this issue.

    BOTTOM LINE: EXCELLENT WORK

I am impressed with the quality of Legion of X #10. It is an excellent show on balancing multiple plot lines and incorporating a unity of writing and art. While I think this plot is a little more complex than it needs to be, it has made excellent creative choices. Legion of X #10 is a solid 5 out of 5 because it sets up exactly what it intends to do well.
