    X-Treme X-Men #2 Review

Christopher RondeauBy Christopher RondeauDecember 30, 20223 Mins Read

Ogun has been evicted from Shadowcat’s mind. Now, the X-Treme X-men are trying to track him down. Find out if they can find Ogun without starting a riot in X-Treme X-Men #2 by Marvel Comics!

    X-TREME X-MEN #2 (OF 5)

    Writer: Chris Claremont
    Artist: Salvador Larroca
    Colorist: Guru-eFx
    Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
    Editor: Mark Basso
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    Release Date: December 28th, 2022

Previously in X-Treme X-Men: Kitty Pryde purged Ogun from her psyche, and the battle reunited the X-Treme X-Men. These mutants now act as global Marshals responsible for keeping the peace between humanity and mutants. Shadowcat may have won the battle, but Ogun is on the loose. They must find a way to stop him without upsetting the anti-mutant group, Purity.

    BACK TO BASICS

X-Treme X-Men #2 starts with Rachel Summers going into Kitty’s mind to try and find a psychic trail. They succeed and find Ogun is using a paramedic at a Purity rally. Wolverine loses his cool and threatens the paramedic in front of the protest. Rachel can shield his presence, and Storm summons rain so they can escape. Gambit realizes that Ogun is using information from Kitty’s mind. Since Kitty does not know Gambit very well, Gambit starts a separate hunt to catch Ogun off guard. Meanwhile, Ogun has taken control of a mutant firefighter in a burning building which Rachel deems to have a psychic fight. Sage and Bishop are attacked by a Purity officer, an enhanced cyborg-like individual called Scrap.

    A LOT OF PLOTLINES

There are at least three plots going on in X-Treme X-Men #2. The first features Shadowcat and Ogun, and the others involve an anti-mutant group and Gambit. Usually, I would say this is too much for a miniseries, but Chris Claremont handles this well. He assumes that you know most of these protagonists and spends time establishing the antagonists in an instructional way. Since we are using well-known X-Men characters, the plot settles quickly on the reader. Chris then can create this intricate story web. However, there are still promises that the story needs to keep. Bishop and Sage are underutilized and need a moment to shine; otherwise, why include them besides their connection to the mutant team? Shadowcat did not play the central role in this comic despite having the plot centered around her. How will she overcome the traumas of the arc? I trust that these things will be addressed in future issues.

The art and coloring were spectacular in this issue. Notably, there is a scene where Storm and Rachel Summers are sitting in the sky. A flash of lighting and the fires of the phoenix illuminate the skyline. This visual stimulus is there throughout the comic. Even small details like Rogue’s tattoo or the rain come to the forefront. Great work by the creative team.

    BOTTOM LINE: SOLID READ

X-Treme X-Men #2 is an excellent study of handling multiple plot lines and a large cast of characters. There are a ton of exciting character developments and a return to the root problems of X-Men, which are fear and prejudice. With solid writing and art, X-Treme X-Men #2 is an easy 4.5 out of 5.
