    LEGION OF X #8

    Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
    Editor: Sarah Brunstad
    Publisher: Marvel Comics

    Release Date: December 14th, 2022

Previously in Legion of X: Warren Worthington III has turned into a murderous winged monster. Luckily, the Black Knight and the Legionnaires are there to stop him. However, Nightcrawler is changing and must control his new mutation. Meanwhile, Mother Righteous has taken an interest in Cypher and Warlock, and Banshee has taken a “Spirit of Variance.”

    THE MONSTER INSIDE

Legion of X #8 starts with Chamber and Husk heading into X-Corp and encountering the Black Knight and some of the Legionnaires fighting a mutated Angel. As they overcome the creature, Nightcrawler loses control. Angel escapes and flies off while Nightcrawler fights to control the terrible temptations. After the fight, Doctor Nemesis reveals that the new Black Knight is a mutant. Pixie concludes that this is Mythomancy, a form of magic that takes people’s beliefs and embellishes them into reality. Since people view mutants as monsters, they, in turn, become monsters. They head to Germany to find the person who cast the spell and find themselves in the circus Nightcrawler grew up in and face Margali of the Winding Way!

Meanwhile, some of the Legionnaires and Banshee find Cypher, who reveals someone or something slithered into Warlock’s Soul. Blindfold also connects to Charles Xavier’s dreams and tells him to repair his relationship with Legion.

    SO MUCH GOING ON

The monster inside motif runs rampant in Legion of X #8. Not only in the literal sense but also metaphorical in Charles Xavier, Legion, and many of the Legionnaires. Si Spurrier presents this theme with excellent organization and skill. I am not overwhelmed by the plot and information thrown at me. In fact, I’m impressed that the pacing doesn’t feel slow in this comic book. I don’t quite understand why we are still adding more characters. Chamber and Husk show up for a minute to turn the tide of the fight with Angel. The Black Knight has a lot of potential storylines here but currently feels out of place. I love the Black Knight hero, both the father and daughter version, but she seems to be here to comment on controlling darkness. Which could have been filled by anyone, in my opinion.

The art is exquisite, but I felt a bit overwhelmed at times. There is a lot to look at with color palette changes and a lot to look at in the background. I think the main characters could pop to the forefront a little more to ensure I know what I am supposed to look at. Still, both the artists and colorist do a fantastic job overall.

    BOTTOM LINE: GREAT STUFF

I love the complexity of Legion of X #8, but I think it is borderline getting out of control. It will overwhelm most readers if they continue adding more ideas to the story. Regardless, Legion of X #8 is 3.5 out of 5 stars, and I can’t wait until the next issue.
