Black Panther Dominates the Box Office Ahead of Thanksgiving – Did You Hear? Week of Friday, November 18th, 2022

Ashley Victoria RobinsonBy Ashley Victoria RobinsonNovember 18, 2022Updated:November 18, 20224 Mins Read

Did You Hear? is a weekly examination of headlines in the entertainment industry and a take on what they could mean for the future of the industry and (often), the little geeky bubble that we occupy!

Silk TV Show Finds it’s Showrunner in Angela Kang

Yesterday The Hollywood Reporter reported that Angela Kang, who had been showrunning the as-yet-untitled Norman Reedus spinoff series from The Walking Dead has made the jump into the Spider-Verse taking up the reigns on the Silk television show. Over the years Silk has been in development in various forms of media and now seems to have settled as Silk: Spider Society for the flagship Sony Marvel television show which will air on first on MGM+ and later on Amazon Prime.

Kang has written on The Walking Dead since the second season of the hit AMC show and shoran the series from seasons 9 through 11 before she moved to the Norman Reedus series and, like Cindy Moon herself, is Korean-American.

Kang said about taking a leadership role on Silk: Spider Society:

“I’m beyond thrilled to be joining the Amazon Studios family for this next chapter of my career,” Kang said. “I look forward to working with the executive team on diverse, character-forward, watercooler shows for a global audience and am so excited to dive into my first challenge — bringing Korean-American superhero Silk to life on screen.”

With Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios adding:

“Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Sony’s recent live-action and animated reimagining of the Spider-Man franchise has represented some of the most dynamic superhero storytelling in film. Together with Angela Kang’s creative vision, we couldn’t be more pleased to bring Silk: Spider Society to our MGM+ and Prime Video customers.”

Kang joins executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller who brought us Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.

Lord and Miller also joined in the praise:

“Angela is a pro’s pro whose perspective and creativity we greatly respect and admire. She’s also a hell of a lot of fun. She loves these characters and we feel really lucky for the chance to work with her to bring Cindy Moon’s story to the world.”

Silk: Spider Society is just one of the projects Kang has in development with Amazon Studios. No release date has been announced for the series.

Wakanda Forever Continues to Dominate the Box Office

Surprising no one the latest installment in the MCU, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, continues to crush box office sales and recent records as it breaks hearts with every single viewing. The Hollywood Reporter has an excellent breakdown of how well the movie is doing all over the world ending Wednesday with a domestic total of $213.2 million and $187.2 million overseas.

    TL;DR

Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has bounded past the $400 million mark at the global box office before heading into its second weekend.

    … reports THR.

This makes it the second biggest 2022 debut right after its fellow MCU movie – Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With Thanksgiving weekend on the horizon here in the United States there’s a good chance of records being smashed by the time I’m writing for you next week.

Walter Hamada Leaves Warner Bros for Paramount

On Tuesday of this week Variety reported Walter Hamada, President of DC Films, will be stepping away from Warner Brothers in the new year and beginning a tenure at another studio known for its genre properties – Paramount.

said Paramount Pictures President and CEO Brian Robbins:

“With his track record for groundbreaking success, Walter is the ideal partner and visionary to build out our mainstream horror genre franchise business. As evidenced by the fantastic performance of ‘Smile,’ there is a tremendous appetite for original, high-concept storytelling in the global marketplace, and we look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

This move will put Hamada in charge of Paramount’s horror offerings which in recent years include the Cloverfield franchise and the recent Paramount+ crossover Significant Other.

    Remarked Hamada about the move:

“I am thrilled to collaborate with Paramount Pictures with the singular goal of creating exceptional movies in the horror genre. Over the course of my career, nothing has been more gratifying than discovering emerging, first-time filmmakers and writers and unleashing their brilliance in a studio setting. Thank you to Brian and the entire team at Paramount Pictures for this tremendous opportunity, I can’t wait to get started.”

Over the past year there have been numerous shakeups at Warner Brothers following the much reported-on Discovery merger and to see it now affecting executives could shake up the status of current properties and popular franchise in exciting and unexpected ways.
