    CRASHING #2

    Letterer: Hassan Otsman-Elhaou
    Editor: Heather Antos
    Publisher: IDW Publishing

    Release Date: October 19th, 2022

Previously in Crashing: Dr. Rose Osler is a doctor working at Mass Gen. Rex Glassman and Piper McNally, two powered heroes, needed medical help after a super-powered brawl. Rose opted to save them despite the policy of the hospital. On top of that, she is blackmailed by villain Gordian and saves his life. As her husband pushes for Anti-Powered legislation, Rose is forced to take an upper to stay awake amongst all her patients. But as a recovering addict, this may be her relapse!

    MAKING MATTERS WORSE

Crashing #2 starts with Rose saving Gordian’s life. Even with her skills, she doesn’t have the trust of Gordian’s henchmen, and they send someone to follow her. Returning home, Rose recovers from the pill and heads to work the next day. While there, she checks Piper’s wounds and realizes he is going through addiction withdrawal. On top of that, Rex knows something about the addiction but deflects Rose’s questioning. Rex airdrops her an app that she can use to call him whenever she is in danger. She is also offered a job as Rex and Piper’s exclusive doctor outside the confines of the hospital.

Taking another pill, she checks on her other patient Gordian. Gordian also offers her a full-time job, which she promptly rejects. Returning home, she gets into an argument with her husband. Unfortunately, Gordian sent henchmen to break into her house!

    THE COST OF ADDICTION

Rose is a compelling character. The creative team used an inner monologue to show her perspective on any situation. In Crashing #2, watching her interpretation of her addiction creates valued insights into the drug experience. Now, I can’t relate, and I don’t know how close this represents a real-life experience. But this book creates an empathetic perspective to root for Rose and hope she can get out safely. This inner dialogue makes the entire story worth it. The basis of the plot is something we have heard before, but it is unique because we see it through the eyes of a struggling Doctor.

The art in this issue grabbed my attention more than the last one. I admit I am not a fan of the monocolored panels, but I am impressed with the details and coloring of Rose’s faith. There is a unique difference between when she is putting on a brave face and when she is alone and processing information. And that is a tricky feat to accomplish. Great work by the creative team in telling this incredible story.

    BOTTOM LINE: SOLID

I’m invested in the story. I wonder if Rose will work full-time for the heroes or the villains. Is this natural conflict of interest going to get her or her husband killed? I can’t wait to find out the next issue. 4.5 out of 5 stars for Crashing #2 by IDW Publishing.
