Previously in My Little Pony: A new generation of ponies are in Equestria and have brought back magic. But with the return of magic, an old villain is returned. Sunny, Pipp, Zipp, Izzy, and Hitch must find Discord and the gem he stole before magic disappears!
THE PRESSURE OF FAME
My Little Pony #4 emphasizes Pip and her online persona. She reaches out to her “pipsqueaks” to see if they can find any information on Discord. However, Pipp wants to be more personal and wonders if she should blog about her deception when she pretended to fly. Pipp asks her mother and all her friends, which discourages her from posting. However, she decides to blog about it regardless but is disappointed when she doesn’t get a lot of views and likes. Pipp receives a message about how she helped a follower navigate a difficult situation. This encourages Pipp, who does a follow-up live stream that encourages people to be themselves! As she walks away, she receives a message from Discord himself!
A NEW ERA
One of the oddest things about this new era of My Litty Pony is the use of technology and how it integrates into society. On top of that, it is weird seeing a creature with hooves somehow using a phone! My Little Pony #4 explores the relationship between influencers and their fans that is oddly similar to the modern day. Watching Pip navigate through what it means to have fame and influence portrays an authentic reality to some people. And on top of that, it is relatable. I know I comment about my 4-year-old a lot. She is the main reason why I pick this comic title to review. But my daughter is very aware of the power of the cell phone, and surprisingly, she understood this story perfectly without any guidance. Great work by Mary Kenny and knowing her target audience.
BOTTOM LINE: SOLID MIDDLE ISSUE
While I wait for Discord to show back up, My Little Pony #4 is telling good stories for their target audience. With consistent, well-done art, this comic has a lot of potential to teach kids positive lessons. 4 out of 5 stars for My Little Pony #4.
