BEWARE THE EYE OF ODIN #3 (OF 4)

    Writer: Doug Wagner
    Artist: Tim Odland
    Colorist: Michelle Madsen
    Letterer: Ed Dukeshire
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
    Release Date: August 24th, 2022

Previously in Beware the Eye of Odin: Helgi has found the Eye of Odin and must return the artifact to Mimir. The only problem is that a group of bloodthirsty trolls has stolen the eye! Helgi, Stigr, and Kadlin recover with the Earthen Smiths. However, Helgi has decided to take his cursed weapon, Mischief’s Whisper, and recover the Eye by himself in an attempt to protect his friends.

    ON YOUR OWN

Beware the Eye of Odin #3 starts with Helgi tracking a troll back to their cave lair. The lair is protected by a three-headed troll that overpowers Helgi. Luckily, Helgi is saved by his friends Kadlin and Stigr. After Stigr berates Helgi, they both admit that Kadlin’s delusion of being a Valkyrie is a liability. They send her off to find her Valkyrie friends to save her. Before she goes, she has an ominous message that either Helgi or Stigr will die.

The duo heads into the cave but is quickly spotted by the trolls. They promptly fight after hordes of trolls, but a spider bites Stigr in the neck, and Mischief’s Whisper is destroyed. When they are overpowered, Kadlin returns with an army of Valkyrie. Stigr, sensing he is dying, decides to continue to fight on his feet as a warrior. The trolls retreat, but a bigger foe is right around the corner.

HOW IS THIS GOING TO END?

The conclusion of this miniseries ends next issue. However, there must be future comics planned. While this is a double-sized issue, the narrative arc implies that they will recover the eye but may still need to return the eye to Mimir. This is for the best. There is a lot of stuff still to explore for these three characters to see. The biggest question is if the next comic has the death of Stigr or if Kadlin’s semi-prophecy was false. Regardless, it will impact the character development of Helgi.

Beware the Eye of Odin #3 is an excellent action-filled comic that breaks from the serious conversations in the previous issue. Seeing these characters heroic and extraordinary was a breath of fresh air. However, I felt the talks were rushed and didn’t allow the readers to process the information. The destruction of Mischief’s Whisper felt like a minute detail after having a massive scene in the previous comic. Good overall, but I hope they touch on this in the next issue.

Lastly, the art of this issue is impressive. The trolls’ details show Tim and Michelle’s skill as an artist/colorist team. Their abilities genuinely shine within this comic. Great work by all.

BOTTOM LINE: EDGE OF MY SEAT

The creative team of Beware the Eye of Odin #3 has done a spectacular job in this comic. The themes of this fantasy story are portrayed well within the comic book medium. This comic is a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
