Previously in Beware the Eye of Odin: Helgi has found the Eye of Odin and must return the artifact to Mimir. He is joined by one-armed blacksmith Stigr and a Valkyrie, Kadlin. The only problem is that the eye was stolen in Shiverwood. When tracking the item down, they found a horde of trolls destroying everything in sight!
NEW ALLIES OR NEW ENEMIES
Beware the Eye of Odin #2 starts with Helgi, Stigr, and Kadlin fighting off the first troll, but Kadlin is knocked unconscious, saving Helgi’s life. The trio thus makes a run for it when they are suddenly rescued by Earthen Smiths, a group of stone creatures resembling dwarves. The Earthen Smiths take them to their home and nurse Kadlin back to health. Meanwhile, Helgi has the axe Mischief’s Whisper, and Stigr is warned that the axe is corrupting Helgi’s mind. However, Helgi decides to run off on his own, in fear that his companions will die if they stay with him.
Beware the Eye of Odin #2 has a great narrative arc and pacing. Despite this being a double-sized issue, the comic read quickly, and I was continuously engaged. I am impressed by the ability of the authors to show so much characterization quickly. This is because the writing and artwork work in harmony. There is a physical change to Helgi when he gets angry with his weapon in hand, and that is excellent to see. Great job by the creative team.
Thematically, this comic works exceptionally well. There is a theme of family. Often Helgi mentions his dad in casual conversation, but Stigr seems like a father figure. While Kadlin didn’t get much page space in this issue, she almost feels like a sister figure. I hope they lean into this in the next issue.
BOTTOM LINE: WELL-WRITTEN
I’m impressed by this series. Doug Wagner knows how to create an engaging story, and the art is beautiful. I don’t see many fantasy comics this well-written. A solid 4.5 out of 5 for Beware the Eye of Odin #2.
