    Mystere: Divinity Oneshot Review

Christopher RondeauBy Christopher RondeauApril 5, 20223 Mins Read

Mystere’s abilities allow her to summon undead spirits and darkness. Unfortunately, this attacks the attention of the Church of Light! Find out if she survives in Mystere: Divinity by Zenescope Entertainment!

Mystere: Divinity ReviewGRIMM SPOTLIGHT MYSTERE: DIVINITY ONE SHOT

    Writer: Joe Brusha
    Artist: Renato Rei
    Colorist: Robby Bevard
    Letterer: Taylor Esposito
    Editor: David Wohl
    Publisher: Zenescope Entertainment
    Cover Price: $5.99
    Release Date: April 6th, 2022

Previously in Mystere: Mary Medina has the power to communicate and control the undead, but her path leads her to many dangers. She found herself homeless and manipulated by people who wished to use her powers for evil. Standing up for herself, Mystere escaped and found a new life. Mary runs the New Dawn Shelter helping people who need help and patrolling as her alter ego!

    RIGHTEOUS FIRE

Mystere: Divinity starts with the death of a voodoo shaman named Corey. Corey was training to heal until he was hunted down by a person who controlled the heavens named Divinity. Mary Medina finds out that Corey is missing and goes to investigate with her ally Talisman. Mary discovers she now has the power to talk to Corey’s spirit directly but cannot get any information before she is attached by Divinity. Talisman draws upon his powers to summon a sword and shield. At the same time, Mary dons her Mystere costume and summons spirits to help. Their assailant is too powerful and smushes Mary under a building before kidnapping Talisman! Mary escapes by using spirits as a barrier and finally talks to Corey. She joins her spirit with Corey’s and finds out a deadly truth.

Mystere heads to the Church of Light to confront Divinity and the church. Divinity uses her powers to burn Talisman alive in front of a congregation while Mystere fights her way past the guards. Mystere chooses not to fight Divinity but instead summons the spirit of Divinity’s dead parents, who reveal that the pastor was the person who killed them. Divinity turns on the Church of Light and helps Mystere save Talisman before going their separate ways.

    SIMPLE STORY

I enjoy the Grimm Universe because of the inspiration they draw upon to make their characters and comics. I enjoy the magic aspect and the recent Voodoo storylines they are featuring. Mystere: Divinity, however, draws its inspiration from Judeo-Christian beliefs. We are getting a figure who can control heat and righteous force. And for some reason, that is not engaging to me at all. I don’t need to see another angel figure, so this book hasn’t retained my attention. The religious zealot is an old trope in many different media, and I didn’t enjoy it here.

Perhaps that is why all the side characters and villains feel inappropriate in the larger context. These villains aren’t established and don’t have the resources to guarantee reader client satisfaction. Zenescope has done an excellent job presenting characters like Mystere and Robyn Hood in the comics. But without the supporting cast, the comic goes downhill. If Zenescope makes engaging seconding characters, I see this is as a blessing to the industry.

    BOTTOM LINE: HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Mystere: Divinity is a super cool concept that falls short due to a lack of engagement for the secondary characters. But despite all that, the characters have cool designs, and the ideas are interesting. This is a 3.5 out of 5 for me, and I am optimistic that future Mystere comics will be solid.
