THE GOOD ASIAN #9 (OF 10)

    Writer: Pornsak Pichetshote
    Artist: Alexandre Tefenkgi
    Colorist: Lee Loughridge
    Letterer: Jeff Powell
    Editor: Will Dennis
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    Release Date: March 9th, 2022

Previously in The Good Asian: A generation of Chinese Americans grew up in the Chinese Exclusion Act and has increased tensions between Chinese and White Americans in San Francisco. Edison Hark came to San Fran to look for Ivy Chen. However, it seems that Victoria Carroway had something to do with Ivy’s disappearance. Victoria and her associate Mr. Nash nearly killed Hark when Hark went to look for Hui Long. Luckily, Edison escaped.

NEAR THE END OF THE CASE

The Good Asian #9 starts with finding out how Edison escaped. There was access to a sewer in the warehouse, and he was able to jump in before the deadly explosion. Using Silas’ resources, he found a doctor who could give him a new face. Meanwhile, Edison and Lucy try to figure out their next move and look over the evidence. Apparently, Woodward tried to blackmail Victoria at one point in time with evidence against Terrance. After Edison is attacked in his room, the duo decides to make their next move.

Edison and Lucy set up a meeting between Victoria and Terrance to see what would happen. And to both their surprise, Terrance and Victoria are getting sloppy and making amateur mistakes. Edison then wonders if Victoria didn’t intend to sell him out, and perhaps she needs help. This causes Edison to finally take off his bandages and look at his new face.

    WHO IS THE CULPRIT

The Good Asian #9 is ramping up the tension to reach its conclusion next issue. This penultimate comic main goal seems to be to confuse the reader. There are so many different characters that I am unsure who the actual villain is. While I have my theories, I don’t know how the next issue will end. Every issue has done a solid job providing more and more clues on what is going on without revealing the mystery. Which is challenging to accomplish, and Pornsak seems to do so with great skill and dexterity. Hopefully, all these plot points will wrap up the next issue in a satisfying way.

One thing I do want to say is that I am impressed that a story that is based on the Chinese Exclusion Act has done so well. I hear about these times from my grandparents, who suffered as Chinese immigrants. Sometimes seeing this on the page is a surreal experience but something I would have wished to share with them. Magnificent work here, and I am continually impressed with the creative team’s choices.

    BOTTOM LINE: SOLID SERIES

I am excited to see the conclusion of The Good Asian. There have been a lot of exciting and cool things that have happened in this comic, and I think this series will stand the test of time. The Good Asian #9 is a 4 out of 5, and I am excited to see its conclusion.
