    Question Of The Day

Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Underrated Avenger Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonNovember 22, 20212 Comments1 Min Read

The upcoming Hawkeye solo TV show has once again opened up an Internet discussion that bugs me, the “Hawkeye Is the Worst” discourse.  I’m honestly not sure where this came from (possibly his being mind-controlled by Loki?) but it has led to a decade or so of stories where Hawkeye is a ne’er-do-well jerk who knows he has no business in the The Avengers.  It’s a big change from the Clint Barton of my youth, who led his own squad and was treated as an equal in leadership by Captain America.  Still, he’s not the most underrated Avenger in the modern era: That crown belongs fully to The Wasp, who went from team chairperson to fridged wife to forgotten bit player faster than you can say “Brian Michael Bendis,” leading to today’s abandoned query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) would have made a similar argument for She-Hulk before the latest Aaron run on Avengers, asking: Which of Earth’s Mightiest is the most Underrated Avenger?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

Well, back in the day they dropped Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) like a cat in a sack of rocks, going from team leader to forgotten friend-of-a-friend basically overnight. Hopefully the MCU can turn that bus around.

I was just about to say “the better Captain Marvel”, but you took care of it.
