Previously in Strange Academy: The Enchantress once promised her firstborn to an evil wizard because she assumed she would never have kids. She was wrong when she bore Iric and Alvi. Doctor Strange promised to protect those kids for as long as he lived. Now that he has passed, Strange’s protection is gone.

    MOTHERHOOD

Strange Academy Presents #1 starts with a brief flashback where Doctor Strange saves the Enchantress’ children. In present-day, students are saying goodbye to each other and the teachers after the school is suspended. Alvi and Iric are preparing to head back when Iric is suddenly kidnapped. Alvi runs to his mom, the Enchantress, and the two of them head to Weirdworld to recover their brother/son. After getting a confusing map, they recruit Goleta the Wizard Slayer to navigate. Together, the three of them are able to defeat Pulsari, the kidnapper, and recover Iric. They then realize that maybe the Enchantress may not be the worst mother after all.

The story then has about ten pages following what the other students are doing as they return home. It features Skottie Young as the writer and a handful of different artists taking on different students from Strange Academy.

    FUN

Strange Academy is a great serious comic title with a well-developed cast of characters. I love the tone of the story and the interpersonal relationships. When I got Strange Academy Presents: The Death of Doctor Strange #1, I found the superficial interpretation of Alvi, Iric, and the Enchantress to be a little boring. The story ideas weren’t bad, and the action was funny and exciting, but the Enchantress isn’t great in the good character role in my opinion. I think we tried to give her the remorseful villain trope, but it felt out of place. Now I’m not saying the story isn’t worth reading but it feels out of tone with the normal title. However, if you want something fun then this is the book for you!

    BOTTOM LINE: NOT FOR ME

Skottie Young did a decent job presenting a nice, fun little one-shot of Strange Academy. But it felt a little out of place in the larger context of the story. It Is still a solid pick-up if you enjoy these characters but might be a skip if you aren’t following the regular title. 3 out of 5 for Strange Academy Presents: The Death of Doctor Strange #1.

    Not for Me

Strange Academy Presents is a fun little story but lacks the depth that I normally expect from this title.
