Major Spoilers Question of the Day: More Eighties Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonSeptember 1, 20214 Comments1 Min Read

As one of Major Spoilers’ resident old guys, I remember the days when MTV was the hot new thing.  It was the eighties, and the only thing more eighties than my friendship bracelet was my Walkman, freshly loaded with Men At Work’s seminal classic, Business As Usual.  It’s a record that gave us Who Can It Be Now?, as well as Down By The Sea, one of the greatest songs of the era.  Of course, whenever Rodrigo wants to mock me for my age, he likes to sing I Ran by A Flock Of Seagulls, leading us to today’s

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) almost threw in Dexy’s Midnight Runner, but thought that’s a yard too far, asking: What’s MORE Eighties: Men At Work or A Flock Of Seagulls?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

The Flock of Seagulls synthpop/new wave thing is very much alive and fairly popular with new bands still doing that style. So i guess Men At Work? You just don’t hear a lot of saxophones outside of modern ska bands anymore….

Men At Work, kicking off their set at Live Aid with Sting providing the “I Want My MTV” opening to “Money For Nothing” is one of the most enduring images of 80s music lingering in my aging mind.

By pure coincidence I purchased Men at Work album Cargo on lp just this last weekend…… so I guess I would have to go that way.
