Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Random Mayhem Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonJuly 5, 20212 Comments1 Min Read

Sometimes, you want to play a video game to figure out a puzzle, or romance an NPC, or complete a particular objective.  Sometimes, there’s an enormous story mode that you have to move your PC through, and other times there’s an open sandbox world.  Sometimes, there’s even both!  But sometimes, just sometimes…  You just want random mayhem.  My kid used to play Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe so that she could spam Shazams against her foes, while my wife sometimes just looks for a fight in the World of Warcraft.  As for me, I either wander the world of Sanctuary blowing things up in Diablo III, or wander the streets of Los Santos looking for super-cars and fist-fights.  It’s a great way to burn off aggression and leads us to today’s 8th generation query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) will sometimes look for pedestrians with hats that you can just punch off their heads, because the animation is hilarious, asking: What is YOUR go-to video game for random mayhem?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

GTA 2 was a classic for a long while. The top-down pov made it feel more like a very advanced, mature audiences NES game, without all the RPG quest-taking trappings of the subsequent games.

Tony Hawk 2 was a fun one too for some non-destructive mayhem…just free skating around the rooftops of Venice Beach listening to that great soundtrack.

Akiba’s Trip. Undead and Undressed has been my comfort game for years now. You fight synthetic vampires hiding amongst crowd by stripping their clothes to expose them to sunlight by using everyday items as weapon. Yeah, its about as silly as it sounds but its also one of the funniest things around.
