Previously in Heroes Reborn: The Avengers never became a team and Earth is protected by the Squadron Supreme of America. With President Coulson at the helm and Mephisto as a worshipped deity, Blade has formed a new team to restore order. However, America has annexed much of Canada for their resources and Wolverine is trying to fight back the way he knows best!

    A HOPELESS CAUSE

Weapon X & Final Flight #1 starts off with a repeat of what we saw in the Heroes Reborn #7 but provides additional context. Wolverine, Shaman, Aurora, Guardian, and Sasquatch, known as Alpha Flight, have killed Hyperion through a combination of magic and sharp claws. This has caused Nighthawk and his American troops to commit to brutal tactics to track down Wolverine’s team. Over the next two years, American troops have begun arresting Canadian citizens under suspicion of protecting Alpha Flight. Unfortunately, Sasquatch cannot take the guilt of putting people in danger and leaves the team.

This prompts Wolverine to take more aggressive action and leads his team in an attack of an American base. He leaves some soldiers alive to report to Nighthawk with a simple message, “Release the prisoners and leave Canada alone.” Sasquatch returns to the team and says that the Squadron Supreme is planning to charge the prisoners with treason and kill them. Wolverine and his team decide to mobilize to prevent this atrocity. Following Sasquatch’s intel, they realize it is a trap and a resurrected Hyperion fights Wolverine. Sasquatch and the rest of the Squadron Supreme prevent them from interfering. After Wolverine is taking to another planet to die, Nighthawk reveals that Sasquatch made a deal. Let Hyperion kill Wolverine in return for everyone’s lives and Canadian freedom.

    WHO IS THE HERO?

The big reveal in Weapon X & Final Flight #1 was that Sasquatch betrayed the rest of Alpha Flight. This was based on the premise that he couldn’t live with innocents being hurt. He also made the statement that Wolverine doesn’t view these people as innocent bystanders but rather as soldiers. This idea that Sasquatch would rather live with the guilt of sacrificing Wolverine to save Canadian citizens is incredibly engaging. Because he views Wolverine as a soldier who was willing to make that sacrifice. And he is right. Regardless, that guilt is probably going to stay with Sasquatch for the rest of his life; an unpleasant reality considering his friends also abandoned him.

I have enjoyed the tone of the Heroes Reborn comic event. It has allowed creators to reimagine old stories in a refreshing way. Sometimes, superhero stories can feel repetitive, and this was a breath of fresh air. The only complaint was the art style. None of the images really stuck out to me. Even seeing Wolverine gasping for air in space lacked the emotional punch I was expecting. Not to say the art was bad, I just wanted something more dynamic for the story being told.

    BOTTOM LINE: I WANT MORE

I wish I got more time exploring some of these ideas. Weapon X & Final Flight #1 deserves a sequel or some sort of follow-up. But the nature of this event means we likely won’t get one. However, it is always better to be left wanting more than bored with too much. This is a solid 4 out of 5 from me. I have a high recommendation of the entire Heroes Reborn comic series and their relevant one-shots. Splendid work from the creative team.

    Left me wanting more

Weapon X & Final Flight gave a great reimagining of Wolverine in the Heroes Reborn World. This sort of creative thinking is riveting on the page.
