The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
A MAN AMONG YE #4
Writer: Stephanie Phillips
Artist: Craig Cermak
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Pirate queens Anne Bonny and Mary Read, along with their all-female crew of buccaneers, are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea as both their former pirate partners and the might of the British Empire close in on them. As the Battle of Nassau rages with cutlasses and cannons, where do the loyalties of Calico Jack Rackham lie? Will Jack be Anne and Mary’s savior or their doom. Writer Stephanie Phillips (Butcher of Paris, Heavy Metal) and artist Craig Cermak (Voltron) continue their pirate adventure!
CHRISTOPHER: I’ve been on a historical fiction and pirate kick this month. This comic clicks those two boxes for me.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #57
Writer: NICK SPENCER
Artist: MARK BAGLEY
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION:
• Spider-Man continues to pick up the pieces and try to put his life together.
• But many of the gathering storms are swirling more and more violently…
• We want to tell you more but it WOULD SPOIL SO MUCH OF LAST REMAINS!!!
STEPHEN: Seriously, you can never go wrong with Amazing Spider-Man. This series continues to be a great comic to meet your needs, and I’ve never been disappointed in a single issue.
THE AUTUMNAL #4
Writer: Daniel Kraus
Artist: Chris Shehan
Publisher: Vault Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: After Kat learns of an old tragedy that brought Comfort Notch to its knees, the bitter, burn-scarred Carol Ravintzky finally tells the tale of the terrible death of Clementine Biddle.
INGRID: Some legends and traditions are rooted in history – a history that may be twisted and half-forgotten as the decades have passed. The idyllic town of Comfort Notch doesn’t give up its secrets easily, but Kat is stubborn. This is a wonderfully atmospheric, delightfully creepy book.
HOME SICK PILOTS #2
Writer: Dan Watters
Artist: Caspar Wijngaard
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Old James House has lost its ghosts. With her new powers, it’s up to Ami to bring them back…whether they want to come home or not. Even when they’re really big ghosts wrapped in metal, with lots of sharp edges and things.
INGRID: So many ghost stories are about how to get the ghosts out of the place they are haunting. In this book, the haunted house is trying to get its ghosts back, and to do that, it is using a young punk musician. It’s a terrific concept and well-executed.
RED SONJA THE SUPERPOWERS #1
Writer: Dan Abnett
Artist: Jonathan Lau
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: FIRST STUNNING ISSUE! The She-Devil With A Sword has battled barbarians, scuffled with sorcerers, and mananged magical creatures of all sizes. But when a collective of superheroes from THE PROJECT enter her world, will Sonja know how to adjust to their foreign ways, before they all kill each other? Sword-and-sandals meets glittering superhero sci-fi, courtesy of superstar DAN ABNETT (Guardians of the Galaxy) and JONATHAN LAU (Red Sonja)!
STEPHEN: Interestingly, Dynamite Entertainment has been doing a very good job with its crossovers that seem like they shouldn’t crossover. We’ve seen Red Sonja meet super powered people previously, so why not see what happens when she meets heroes in the public domain?
SPACE BASTARDS #1
Writer: Joe Aubrey and Eric Peterson
Artist: Darick Robertson
Publisher: Humanoids Inc.
Cover Price: $5.99
SOLICITATION: Acclaimed artist Darick Robertson (The Boys, HAPPY!) joins writers Eric Peterson and Joe Aubrey as they unleash the galaxy’s most vicious and depraved…parcel couriers?
Poor David S. Proton. A meek, unemployed accountant desperate for money, he joins the Intergalactic Postal Service, paired with Manny Corns, a.k.a. “The Manicorn,” a sardonic brute who thrives on the competition provided by the IPS. But delivery is mercenary for these intergalactic dispatchers-payment goes solely to whoever fulfills the delivery, making every run a comically violent free-for-all between the most ruthless degenerates in the cosmos. Stand back, Lobo! Make way, Han Solo — here come the Space Bastards!
CHRISTOPHER: This looks like a fun new series from a publisher I’m not familiar with. But for me, it is always cool to look at something new. The premise is exciting, and the art looks spectacular.
ROBOT OVERLORD: Instead of worrying and agonizing, move ahead constructively.
