IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

You can purchase this issue via the comiXology affiliate link

    DRYAD #8
    Writer: Kurtis J. Wiebe
Artist: Justin Barcelo and Tomas Oleksak
    Publisher: Oni-Lion Forge Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: They say blood runs thicker than water, but that blood’s been running thin for the Glass family since Yale’s disappearance. His family has always been a complicated one, and the grand return of the “prodigal son” couldn’t unhinge his brother Lou more. Their father still holds hope that Yale will resume his previous position, making chopped liver of Lou, but to appease their father, they’ll try to put their differences aside and mend the shattered Glass.

CHRISTOPHER: Dryad has a great amalgam of science-fiction and fantasy. However, that is no longer a surprise and I am curious to see if the characters and plot will be able to sustain the title. Always looking forward to this read.

    THE ETERNALS #1
    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Artist: Esad Ribic
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: NEVER DIE. NEVER WIN. ETERNALS.

What’s the point of an eternal battle? For millions of years, one hundred Eternals have roamed the Earth, secret protectors of humanity. Without them, we’d be smears between the teeth of the demon-like Deviants. Their war has waged for all time, echoing in our myths and nightmares.

But today, Eternals face something new: change. Can they – or anyone on Earth – survive their discovery?

From the thought provoking minds of Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Uncanny X-Men, Thor) and Esad Ribi? (Secret Wars, King Thor) comes a new vision of the classic Marvel mythology!

MATTHEW: After The Wicked + The Divine and Die, I think Kieron can pull off nearly anything, even the task of taking one of Jack Kirby’s most off-beat casts of characters and pulling it all into a coherent story.

    FIRE POWER #7
    Writer: Robert Kirkman
    Artist: Chris Samnee
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Dragon’s Claw has struck! Damage has been dealt! Owen and his family are reeling from the loss-and more danger lurks on the horizon!

MATTHEW: What I though was gonna be a weird Iron Fist knockoff has turned into a fun, fast-paced and nuanced read. Samnee’s art is killer, too. You guys should check this out!

STEPHEN: There is a reason why Fire Power landed on my best of 2020 list, and I think this issue is going to serve as the launching point for the next big adventure.

    Future State: Wonder Woman #1
You can purchase this issue via the comiXology affiliate link

    FUTURE STATE: WONDER WOMAN #1
    Writer: Joelle Jones
    Artist: Joelle Jones
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest lies a hero of mythic legend…Wonder Woman! But in the absence of Diana, Yara Flor has risen out of obscurity to protect Man’s World from the magic that lies within it. Along with her trusty steed, she journeys to the Underworld to rescue one of her Themysciran sisters from the grasp of Hades. Will she unleash the wrath of this god in the process? You won’t want to miss this first appearance of a character who will change the history of Wonder Woman forever!

INGRID: Wonder Woman is one of my all-time favorite characters, but she is also a heroic archetype. I am intrigued by the whole concept of Future State and this re-imagining of the character sounds delightful.

MATTHEW: I don’t know what Future State actually has in store for the DCU, but this is the character about whom I’m most excited. Maybe she’ll even stick around?

    THE LAST WITCH #1
    Writer: Conor McCreery
    Artist: V. V. Glass
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: It’s the one time of the year when the witch known as Cailleach hunts the children of the village — so Saoirse, a brave and reckless young girl, decides this is the perfect opportunity to defy her father and discover the secrets of the witch’s tower! But when the Cailleach captures Saoirse and her brother Brahm, their lives are forever changed in ways they never expected. Now, Saoirse will have to save everyone she loves by discovering the truth about the mysterious mark on her shoulder — and embracing her secret magical powers! Every issue of The Last Witch is oversized, featuring more than 30 story pages.

CHRISTOPHER: This book looks super cute. Both the artwork and the premise promises to be a super worthwhile story.

INGRID: I cannot resist the lure of a tale about a young girl off on an adventure. This looks enchanting, and I am curious to see how the story develops. At 30 plus pages, there’s also room for a little more development in each issue.

STEPHEN: This is a charming issue, and though it hits all the points you expect, it does it in a way that makes you want to turn the page to see what happens next. Definitely a fun read!

ROBOT OVERLORD: You can never been certain of success, but you can be certain of failure if you never try.
