Previously in X-Men: Mutantkind has brought a new status quo when the island of Krakoa has allowed them to live there in peace. Allies and enemies alike have come together to try and bring real unity to the mutant nation for once. Krakoa can produce life saving medication and can resurrect fallen mutants. While on Krakoa, the possibilities are endless!

    THE TWILIGHT SWORD

Before there was Krakoa, there was Okkara. The Twilight Sword tore the land asunder and created Krakoa and Arakko. Apocalypse sent the Summoner, Banshee, and Unus to find Arakko but they were ambushed in the Otherworld. Unus was taken prisoner and Banshee was nearly killed! Apocalypse gathers a team to try and recover Unus and find out the state of the multiverse. Apocalypse and several other mutants head to the Otherworld as their first stop to Arakko and they see the Starlight Citadel under attack. Meanwhile, Cable and Rachel Summers look into Banshee’s mind to see that he wasn’t attacked; he fell into the Summoner’s trap!

Apocalypse arrives to find his four children leading the attack on the Starlight Citadel. His Four Horseman leading the charge to reclaim Krakoa to the twilight sword. Instead of a heartwarming welcome, the Summoner unleashes his true plan. He was to bring Apocalypse here so that his children could kill him! The mutant team then tries to escape and causes Saturnyne to intervene and she establishes a battle between Apocalypse’s children and mutant kind. Find the ten swords, pick your champions, and fight for the future of Okkara! Meanwhile, Cable, Cyclops, and Jean Grey find their way to a space station and open up a stable transpace bridge.

    THIS IS A LONG ISSUE

This is a huge 60+ page book that launches the next mutant event. One of the main themes I noticed was one of family. Apocalypse meets his children that he thought were dead and there is a teary reunion from Apocalypse that unfortunately is not shared by his children. Meanwhile, Cable, Rachel, and their parents work together to decipher Banshee’s memory and open up this space bridge. I thought it was quite interesting to see this very clear parallel that then becomes a sounding board to shine on all other characters. For example, Polaris joins Apocalypse’s team because her father says she needs to represent them and Havok is there at Cyclop’s request. I wonder how this theme is going to further be developed in future books considering who the main antagonists are.

Other highlights was Angel joining Apocalypse on this mission because of his distrust for him. I want to see if Angel’s opinion has changed of him now that he was betrayed by his children. There is also this underlying destiny theme that was introduced. This event seems to be seeped with prophecy that is introduced through Tarot Cards, meaning we may get a theme of fate vs free will. I wonder what that could mean when some of these characters have traditionally been villains. Are they fated to be villains or can they become heroes? I don’t really know if they are going to explore that theme but I am interested in the idea nonetheless.

BOTTOM LINE: A MASSIVE BOOK WITH GOOD EXPOSITION

I love the Krakoa nation and the ideas behind it. It is as if mutants finally decided that they can be mutants instead of just trying to be humans with powers. I don’t know how this is going to play out, but I like that we will continue to see heroes and villains working together. With great art pages, good foreshadowing, and at least ten more books spanning all the X-men titles; well we are in for a wild ride. 4.5 out of 5  for X of Swords: Creation from me. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.
