IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

a man among ye 2A MAN AMONG YE #2
    Writer: Stephanie Phillips
    Artist: Craig Cermak
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The adventures of pirate queens Anne Bonny and Mary Read might be over before they begin, as a murderous mutiny sweeps “Calico Jack” Rackham’s crew, forcing Anne and Mary to flee for their lives. Can they survive on the high seas long enough to plot their revenge and gather their own crew?

CHRISTOPHER: This has been an interesting and fun interpretation of the famous historical pirates Anny Bonny and Mary Read. The art is pretty stellar and the story is one of a kind.

    avengers 35AVENGERS #35
    Writer: Jason Aaron
    Artist: Javi Garron
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: An empowered, godlike Moon Knight has just saved the world from fiery ruin. Now an army of mummies and moon priests begins to reshape the world in the image of ancient Egypt. But where does that leave the Avengers? Broken, imprisoned – or on the run in the moonlit streets of New Thebes City.

MATTHEW: Aaron’s run on Avengers has involved a lot of wildly creative, previously unthinkable moments, with Moon Knight defeating the Avengers and stealing many of their powers is right up there. I’m hoping that they can stick the landing.

    maestro 01MAESTRO #1 (OF 5)
    Writer: Peter David
Artist: German Peralta and Dale Kwoen
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: THE STORY YOU’VE WAITED DECADES FOR: THE ORIGIN OF MAESTRO!
Almost 30 years after the landmark story Future Imperfect, legendary INCREDIBLE HULK scribe Peter David returns to the far-future version of the Hulk known as Maestro – the master of what remains of the world. With astounding art from HULK veteran Dale Keown and up-and-comer Germán Peralta, Maestro will answer questions that have haunted Hulk fans for years – and inspire some new ones. How did the world fall and the Maestro rise? What happened to the world’s heroes in between? And where is the Hulk we know and love? Find out here!

CHRISTOPHER: I enjoy smart hulk more than I enjoy angry hulk. Maestro is a great interpretation of what the Hulk could be and I’m on board with seeing how he got there!

once and future 10ONCE AND FUTURE #10
    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Artist: Dan Mora
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Revenge is the greatest motivator and Gran and Duncan have awakened the ire of the mother of all monsters…

INGRID: After setting up the world with a riff on the Arthurian saga, Gillen is in the midst of a reimagining of Beowulf with Grendel rampaging through the real world. He’s big, he’s monstrous – and his story is running off the rails! Exquisite art makes the action leap off the pages.

drakkonPOWER RANGERS DRAKKON: NEW DAWN #1
    Writer: Anthony Burch
    Artist: Simone Ragazzoni
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: After the shocking events of Power Rangers: Ranger Slayer, Kimberly is determined to purge the world of Drakkon’s legacy, starting with Deadlock; the prison tower where Drakkon held all those who opposed him. But even the Ranger Slayer has no clue of the true power kept in Deadlock-and what unlocking the doors will set into motion. As Kimberly investigates the worst of Drakkon’s secrets, she sets in motion Drakkon’s final plan-one that will pit her against a fan favorite Power Rangers villain!

MATTHEW: Do I hate Drakkon? Yes, I do. Do I want to know his evil plan and see the Rangers stop it? Yes, I do. Catch this one when Stephen and I discuss it on this week’s Dueling Review!

    savage dragon 251SAVAGE DRAGON #251
    Writer: Erik Larsen
    Artist: Erik Larson
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “CRAWLING FROM THE WRECKAGE” – Following the cataclysmic conclusion of SAVAGE DRAGON #250, Malcolm Dragon has to put the pieces of his shattered life back together. A standalone issue that sets the stage for what’s to come, from award-winning writer/artist ERIK LARSEN. A great jumping-on point for new readers!

MATTHEW: So, I read Savage Dragon #250, and I don’t understand what cataclysm they mean, but the final page cliffhanger still makes me want to know what comes next. Here’s hoping it’s not more death or sex tapes.

    shadowservice1SHADOW SERVICE #1
    Writer: Cavan Scott
    Artist: Corin Howell
    Publisher: Vault Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Worried your partner is cheating? Need a missing person found? Gina Meyers is the Private Investigator for you. Sure, she’s a witch who worries that her powers make her more of a monster than the crooks she’s trying to catch, but it’s not like London’s criminal underworld is literally going to hell… is it? Spy craft meets black magic in the shadowy world of MI666.

INGRID: Oh my gosh – it’s like getting chocolate in my peanut butter! A book about a witch who is also a P.I.? Yes, please! I’ve been impressed by the interesting titles that keep coming from Vault and this looks like another solid one.

ROBOT OVERLORD: The love of your life is stepping into your planet this summer.
