    Question Of The Day

Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Patriotic Hero Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonAugust 14, 20204 Comments1 Min Read

It’s a lesser-known fact that Captain America, the best known patriotic hero in comics history, is actually modeled after an earlier character called The Shield, to the point where his trademark circular shield had to be changed after the first appearance, as it resembled The Shield’s costume too much.  Cap is hardly the only hero to have such pride in his home, as a literal legion of Captains from the 40s will attest, as well as America Chavez, Captain Britain and the Super Sentai Battle Fever J team can attest, leading to today’s fervent query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) reminds Faithful Spoilerites that “patriotic” wouldn’t necessarily mean “United States”, so characters like Guardian or La Borinqueña could count, asking: Which character is the best patriotic hero WHO IS NOT CAPTAIN AMERICA?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

The favorite of my collection is Jack Staff. He’s Britain’s Greatest Hero, don’t you know.

        Well-played.

Unconventional take, but would Captain Picard count in this question?

Hmmm… He might, if you show your work. :D
