IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    Action Comics #1022
You can purchase this issue via comiXology

    ACTION COMICS #1022
    Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
    Artist: John Romita, Klaus Janson
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99

SOLICITATION: First, Metropolis was hit with the biggest ground battle in the history of the city and barely survived. On top of that, Leviathan threw down his gauntlet for the entire world to see, and Superman revealed the truth of his identity as Clark Kent. Now the city is in a state of shock-and Clark and Conner Kent need to figure out what’s next for them and the city they protect! Guest-starring Wonder Comics’ Young Justice in a unique crossover!

STEPHEN: This is a start of a whole new arc featuring the return of — CONNER KENT? I enjoyed the issue, but be aware that knowledge of what has gone on in Action Comics (and Legion of Super-heroes) since #1000 will be helpful.

    Back Track #3
You can purchase this issue via comiXology.

    BACKTRACK #3
    Writer: Brian Joines
    Artist: Jake Elphick
    Publisher: Oni Press

SOLICITATION: Alyson and company turn up high and dry in an uncharted forest in China. But this leg of the competition comes with an unwelcome twist, and our drivers find themselves in a literal race against time when a mysterious clock begins ticking down. The question is, what happens when it hits zero?

JONATHAN: Backtrack has been a flawed but fun series so far. I was on the fence about whether to continue reading this or not, but the promise of a new twist has me curious.

    Birds of Prey 31
You can purchase this issue via comiXology

    BIRDS OF PREY #1
    Writer: Brian Azzarello
    Artist: Emanuela Lupacchino, Ray McCarthy
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $9.99

SOLICITATION: Black Canary’s life has spiraled out of control: her personal life is going through the ringer and her band is in crisis when an old flame resurfaces only to flicker out and set her on an all-new mission against an all-new opponent. The only thing she has to be grateful for is the fact that she’s not alone, as Huntress finds herself on a collision course with Black Canary’s quarry at Detective Montoya’s urging. Meanwhile, Harley Quinn has resurfaced outside of Gotham City and out of the Suicide Squad, with a new lease on life that is sure to make everyone else’s life more complicated.

MATTHEW: I’m a little bit leery of Azzarello as a writer (especially in the vicinity of Harley Quinn), but the premise here seems like it’s got a lot of potential.

STEPHEN: It’s a Black Label title, so that should give you a little heads up on what to expect in the issue – hehehe, I said heads… This book feels like a blueprint for a future movie.

    The Boys: Dear Becky #1
You can purchase this issue via comiXology

    THE BOYS: DEAR BECKY #1
    Writer: Garth Ennis
    Artist: Russell Braun
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99

SOLICITATION: Twelve years after the events of The Boys, Hughie finds himself back home in Scotland where he intends to finally marry Annie in the company of friends and family. But the sudden appearance of a peculiar document sends our hero into a tailspin and threatens to bring the events of his nightmarish past crashing down on him in the worst possible way. There was one story about The Boys that Hughie never knew. Now, whether he likes it or not, he’s going to.

MATTHEW: I sincerely hope that this is as good as the best parts of The Boys while being better than the worst parts of The Boys.

    Far Sector #6
You can purchase this issue via comiXology

    FAR SECTOR #6 (OF 12)
    Writer: N.K. Jemisin
    Artist: Jamal Campbell
    Publisher: DC Comics

SOLICITATION: Tensions in the City Enduring are high as the Emotion Exploit—the mandatory genetic tech that strips citizens of their emotions in the name of peace—is up for referendum. But Jo’s attentions are divided when Councilor Marth makes a surprising and distinctly emotional overture…

JONATHAN: Far Sector has been one of my absolute favorite series since it started. It’s managed to do some interesting things with the Green Lantern mythos, while also being a socially conscious book. And considering recent events, this may be the most relevant installment yet.

    G. I. Joe #271
You can purchase this issue via comiXology

    G.I JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO #271
    Writer: Larry Hama
    Artist: Robert Atkins
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99

SOLICITATION: “SNAKE HUNT” Part 6! We’re at the midpoint, and the thrills are just getting started! Cobra Commander wants a Snake Eyes of his own. The Joes have other ideas. It’ll take two armies to settle this dispute! It’s all hands on deck for both G.I. Joe and Cobra as living legend Larry Hama and fan-favorite artist Robert Atkins continue their massive 10-issue event… featuring EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF G.I. JOE! There’s no halftime break in this contest, folks! All action, all the time!

MATTHEW: The new Snake-Eyes is the best thing in G.I. Joe in a while, and I’m psyched to see how the drama around her creation plays out, especially with Cobra after the wrong one…

ROBOT OVERLORD: Time may fly by. But Memories don’t.
