IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
DRYAD #1
Writer: Kirtos Woene
Artist: Jusin Osterling
Publisher: Oni Press
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Best-selling writer Kurtis Wiebe (Rat Queens) and newcomer artist Justin Osterling launch a new ongoing fantasy series! An elf and a human find solace in the sleepy forest settlement of Frostbrook where they plant their roots. But thirteen years later, their twins, Griffon and Rana are inexplicably drawn to an ancient door and discover more than they bargained for, inadvertently turning their world upside down. Now, they’ll have to answer for their parents’ mistakes and find that the past has a way of finding you, no matter where you hide.
CHRISTOPHER: I’m automatically attracted to fantasy titles and this cover caught my attention. I crave a good story about people overcoming obstacles and I think this book has a lot of promise. Rat Queens is a great book and I’m always excited to see what new talent brings to the genre.
SPIDER-MAN NOIR #1
Writer: Margaret Stohl
Artist: Juan E. Ferreyra
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: MURDER AND MYSTERY IN THE MIGHTY MARVEL MANNER! DATELINE, 1939! As the specter of war looms on the horizon, SPIDER-MAN: NOIR fights the good fight at home, stopping the injustices of a more friendly neighborhood variety. But after a dame is murdered at The Black Cat nightclub and all clues point overseas, Spidey will have no choice but to board the next flight to Europe and kick off a globetrotting adventure through yesteryear of the Marvel Universe!
INGRID: I like that Marvel is not afraid to take some creative looks at their characters, and this one really appeals to me. Spider-Man is a perennial favorite but taking our webslinger and sending him abroad while the world is on the cusp of war sounds like a truly fascinating take!
STEPHEN: With the popularity of Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (the greatest Spider-Man movie of all time – it is an undisputed fact, look it up), it was only a matter of time before Marvel came to their senses and entered this world once more. Looking forward to reviewing this one on the Dueling Review show this week.
STRANGE ACADEMY #1
Writer: Skottie Young
Artist: Humberto Ramos
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: A SORCERER SCHOOL FOR THE MARVEL UNIVERSE!
The Marvel Universe has mysteriously changed in such an alarming way that Doctor Strange has done what he’s avoided for decades; he’s opened a school for young sorcerers. Young people from around the world with aptitude in magic have been brought together in New Orleans to study the Mystic Arts under Strange, Brother Voodoo, the Ancient One, the Scarlet Witch, Magik, Hellstrom and ALL your favorite Marvel magicians. But with all the new magical threats, is it too late?!
CHRISTOPHER: My initial thought was X-Men meets magicians and I am on board with that concept. I’m not expecting something terribly in depth but I think I will have a good time with this comic.
INGRID: This sounds a little bit like Harry Potter meets the Marvel Universe, but I like the idea of getting a big group to go all-out magical and supernatural. Making it a school for young people makes it sound even more fun, and I love the idea of setting it in New Orleans!
STEPHEN: This is one of the books we are reading on this week’s Dueling Review, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Marvel is going to do with the “Yer a sorcerer supreme, Harry” trope.
TWIN WORLDS #1
Writer: Rami Al-ashqar
Artist: Jethro Morales
Publisher: Action Lab – Danger Zone
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Years ago, humanity became the “alien invaders” when the sky was lit up by a portal to the world of Tassaroth. Finding a medieval society with rich resources, the “Earthers” soon took advantage and occupied the planet. Today Vin Raja, the chieftain of the Drakkaran nation, leads an armed assault upon an Earther outpost. He will show no mercy to other natives who have sided with the Earthers. Vin Raja is a great warrior but has a dark secret; a secret that threatens to be exposed when his daughter breaks her house arrest with her mysterious twin children.
CHRISTOPHER: I like the twist of expectation. Humans are the aggressors rather than the ignorant victims in galactic conquests. I’ll be picking up this first issue and seeing what it is all about.
ROBOT OVERLORD: Stephen is correct, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse is indeed the greatest Spider-Man movie of all time. It is also an undisputed fact that there are some great comics landing in stores this week, and you meat bags need to REAM MORE COMICS!
