IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

ADVENTURE FINDERS: EDGE OF EMPIRE #4
    Writer: Rod Espinosa
    Artist: Rod Espionosa
    Publisher: Action Lab Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: She wanted so much more than what her small town had to offer! This was the dream of starry eyed fishmonger Clariette de Artegnean. She, her cousin Jolfe Endarion, and new friend Sister Ariarra Popplevensie have now embarked on what is turning out to be a very perilous journey! Fleeing deep into the woods to escape slaughter, Clari and her small band are beset by verbolg skirmishers! Abandoned and left with few fighting men, Clari and her cousin Jolfe with Sister Ariarra and newfound ally Asogog, the gnoll warrior, they push onwards deeper into the woods! But the verbolg do not give up easily. And they are led by vicious leaders determined to wipe them out!

CHRISTOPHER: A lovely series with a creator who pays attention to the details. There is a lot of depth here within the main characters and I look forward to watching them grow up.

    ANNIHILATION SCOURGE: NOVA #1
    Writer: Matthew Rosenberg
    Artist: Ibraim Roberson
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: The universe hangs in peril! With no room for old grudges, Nova is forced to team up with one of his most nefarious adversaries – ANNIHILUS! But can Richard Rider trust the ruler of the Negative Zone to fight alongside him – or will this turn into a war with two fronts?

MATTHEW: It’s nice to have the original Nova back in circulation, but why are we recycling space crises? Either way, I’m wanting to see what’s up with this, even as the writer gives me pause.

    THE BUTCHER OF PARIS #1
    Writer: Stephanie Phillips
    Artist: Dean Kotz
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics LLC
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In 1944, as Swastikas flew over Paris, one of the most notorious and prolific serial killers in history turned the occupied city into his personal hunting ground. Under the guise of opportunity and freedom, a killer preys on those desperate to flee . . . until a gruesome discovery alerts the police. In a city on the brink of war, the hunt for a serial killer begins as a French detective races to catch the villain before the Nazis beat him to it. Written by Stephanie Phillips (Descendent, Devil Within) with art by Dean Kotz (Mars Attacks), The Butcher of Paris is a historical, true crime thriller about a killer wanted by both the Nazis and allied forces for the death of nearly two hundred victims.

INGRID: If you like true crime and serial killers, this book sounds utterly fascinating. Imagine a serial killer preying on people in Paris at the height of the German occupation. The City of Lights becomes a city of darkness, and the desperate have no idea who they can trust.

    DIE #10
    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Artist: Stephanie Hans
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION: Forget escaping DIE.

MATTHEW: Never, ever split the party, even if it makes for great comics.

    James Bond #1JAMES BOND #1
Writer: Vita Ayala & Danny Lore
    Artist: Eric Gapstur
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: New series, new team, new missions! VITA AYALA (Morbius, Age Of X-Man), DANNY LORE (Queen Of Bad Dreams) and ERIC GAPSTUR (James Bond 007) present a fresh take on the world’s greatest secret agent. When a priceless piece of art is found to be fake, investigations lead down a rabbit hole of international crime and corruption. But what the hell does James Bond know about the world of art forgery? Featuring a cover by superstar JIM CHEUNG (Justice League, Young Avengers), that will be revealed as an interlocking image over the first three issues!

INGRID: James Bond has been hugely popular for some time, and for good reason. Not only is he well known, but as a secret agent, he can be in all sorts of stories. This one involves art forgery – and a possible theft. Is this a heist? And how does espionage figure into it? I am already intrigued!

    MARAUDERS #3
    Writer: Gerry Dugan
    Artist: Michele Bandini
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: SALT WATER & HELLFIRE! THE NEW BLACK BISHOP OF THE HELLFIRE CLUB!
Sebastian Shaw recruits a new Black Bishop continuing with his machinations against the two Queens of the Hellfire Club! Meanwhile, Captain Kate and her Marauders wreak havoc on the high seas from the Atlantic to the Pacific in the name of the mutant cause!
    Rated T+

JONATHAN: Nearly all of the X-Men centric books lost some steam in their 2nd issue, except Marauders. The setup established in #2 is an interesting one and I’m curious to see if they can begin to deliver on it here in #3.

    MEDIEVAL
    Writer: Chris Sorrell
    Artist: Jason Wilson
    Cover Price: $12.99
SOLICITATION: Created by MediEvil’s original co-creators, this brand-new original comic story offers a whole new perspective on the world of Gallowmere and Sir Daniel Fortesque. Beautifully illustrated and full of surprising revelations, it is sure to be a joyful surprise for fans of the classic PlayStation game.

MediEvil: The Comic Prequel tells the story of Sir Daniel Fortesque after the ending of MediEvil 2. Traveling back in time Sir Dan encounters his original, living self and (re)experiences the events leading up to the legendary battle in which he first lost his life. He must work with some old friends and battle some old foes if he is to save his kingdom and seal his status as the Hero of Gallowmere.

CHRISTOPHER: I remember playing this game when it was on the original Playstation. It brings up imagery of a tragic knight and sort of the melancholy of undeath. Looking forward to reading this graphic novel and reliving the nostalgia.

MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1
    Writer: Ryan Parrott
    Artist: Simone Di Meo
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios/IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: The Power Rangers arrive in New York City to find Tommy Oliver (a.k.a. The Mighty Morphin Green Ranger) but soon discover he’s joined forces with the villainous Shredder and the Foot Clan! As the Rangers are sent reeling by this betrayal, they ‘re confronted by another (fr)enemy… the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Can these heroes find a way to work together to defeat the bad guys and save the world from total destruction?!

MATTHEW: I’ve always said that Dynamite and BOOM! would eventually option and adapt everything, and now they’ve joined forces to combine two juggernaut properties. Can’t wait for Vampirella/Richie Rich/Buckaroo Banzai, coming in 2020! Seriously, though, this kind of sounds awesome, and the creative team has been rocking the Power Rangers title, so I’m really interested.

STEPHEN: This was a lot more fun than I thought it would be, and the Tommy/Steve reveal was a nice way to bring the teams together. Definitely worth checking out this week.

    NEW YEAR’S EVIL #1
Writers: Vita Ayala, Gabriel Hardman, Corinna Bechko, Dan Watters, Others
Artists: Dale Eaglesham, Gabriel Hardman, Sumit Kumar, Elena Casagrande, Others
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $9.99
SOLICITATION: Why hello there, readers! It’s your Uncle Joker letting you know that this year’s DC winter holiday special is not for the good guys. It’s all about the folks on Santa’s naughty list! Folks like me, Sinestro, Toyman, Harley Quinn, and even an appearance from that timely rascal the Calendar Man. Come sledding with your favorite villains in 10 fantastic tales created by comics’ finest talents. They’re not as funny as me, mind you, but it’s important that we be charitable this time of year.

JONATHAN: I’ll admit it, I’m sort of a sucker for holiday themed comics. Even moreso, I’m a sucker for anthologies, so this one is just too much to pass up.

    SPIDER-MAN & VENOM: DOUBLE TROUBLE #2
    Writer: Mariko Tamaki
    Artist: Gurihiru
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION: Venom for the Win!
    • After switching bodies with Spider-Man, Venom returns to the world of athletic competition reality shows! Wait, what?
    • Can Spidey find a way to swap them back before Venom ruins his reputation?
comes an all-new take on your favorite arch-Frienemies in the MU – and now they’ve gotta work together to set things right!
    Rated T

JONATHAN: I didn’t think I needed an Odd Couple style sitcom with Spider-Man and Venom with Ghost Spider as their put upon neighbor, but the first issue of this series hooked me hard and I want more spider-family shenanigans.
