IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    BASKETFUL OF HEADS #2
    Writer: Joe Hill
    Artist: Leomacs, Dan McDaid
    Publisher: DC Comics/Hill House Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Hunted to the point of exhaustion, June Branch struggles to outwit and outfight the home invader coming after her. He’s armed with a .44 and a secret agenda; she’s got a thousand year-old Viking relic and no way to escape. The axe is about to fall in the topsy-turvy second chapter of the horror story with the sharpest edge in comics! Fears escalate and a full moon rises over the HMS Havoc in chapter three of the “Sea Dogs” backup tale, written by Joe Hill!

MATTHEW: The first issue of BoH was impressive in terms of art and an interesting horror-tinged story. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this is going…

STEPHEN: I really enjoyed the first issue of this book, even though the supernatural/horror aspect of the book hasn’t been fully revealed. I’ve enjoyed Joe Hill’s comic book work before, and I am enjoying this one as well.

    JOHN CONSTANTINE HELLBLAZER #1
    Writer: Si Spurrier
    Artist: Aaron Campbell
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: John Constantine is back in London, back to his old tricks-and just in time, as things have become very dark indeed in his old stomping grounds. A small-time gang lord has found himself dealing with a big-time outbreak of supernatural weirdness…and without any allies to call on and nothing left to call his own, John doesn’t have much choice about taking a paycheck from one of London’s worst, or accepting the help of one of the gang lord’s would-be foot soldiers. But what should be an open-and-shut exorcism turns out to be nothing but…and the author of this madness may just be getting started on their terrible masterpiece! The original Constantine is back in this series from Si Spurrier (The Dreaming) and Aaron Campbell (Infidel), with nothing to his name but decades of bad memories and an unearned second chance. How, exactly, will he squander it? There’s only one way to find out…

MATTHEW: I feel like there may have been some dirty tricks involved in getting the “original” Constantine back in circulation, but dirty tricks is kind of his whole deal. I’m excited to see what Spurrier can do with John and his supporting cast.

    KILLADELPHIA
    Writer: Rodney Barnes
    Artist: Jason Shawn Alexander
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: SINS OF THE FATHER,” Part One Featuring the show-stopping talents of SPAWN series artist JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER and the writer behind such hit shows as Wutang: An American Saga, Marvel’s Runaways, and Starz’s American Gods—RODNEY BARNES. When a small-town beat cop comes home to bury his murdered father—the revered Philadelphia detective James Sangster Sr.—he begins to unravel a mystery that leads him down a path of horrors that will shake his beliefs to their core. The city that was once the symbol of liberty and freedom has fallen prey to corruption, poverty, unemployment, brutality… and vampires. Welcome to KILLADELPHIA.

INGRID: I’ve seen some pages from this book, and it looks incredible. Dark, tense, and gritty, this blend of police procedural and horror looks like it will be incredible!

    MACHINE GUN WIZARDS #4
    Writer: Christian Ward
    Artist: Sami Kivela
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The dark forces behind Al Capone’s illegal magic operation come out in full force, and Elliot Ness and his team must battle through an army of mobsters, wizards, and ancient powers that threaten more than just Chicago’s lowlifes. A new genre-bending comic series from Christian Ward, artist of the acclaimed sci-fi epic ODY-C. Drawn by Sami Kivelä (Abbott), with backup stories written and drawn by Christian Ward.

MATTHEW: There’s nothing like a good mash-up, and I’m looking to see if this book can finish off as strong as its premise.

SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS #5
    Writer: Jon Tsuei
    Artist: Audrey Mok
    Publisher: Vault Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Alone and hunted by daeva, Sera comes face-to-face with Eltanin, the mastermind behind the suffering that has befallen Parsa. Will Sera defeat her greatest foe and return the Royal Stars to the heavens or will this be the end?

INGRID: Sera has been separated from her body in an effort to find a bridge back to the waking world from the Underworld, and the challenges are tricky. This is a beautiful book with a grand quest and a full slate of fascinating characters in the Royal Stars she comes across. Vault Comics has quite a knack for delivering great books that don’t feel like something you’ve seen before.

    X-FORCE #2
    Writer: Ben Percy
    Artist: Joshua Cassara
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: THE HIGH PRICE OF A NEW DAWN!
X-Force is the CIA of the mutant world-one half intelligence branch, one half special ops. Beast, Jean Grey and Sage on one side, Wolverine, Kid Omega and Domino on the other. In a perfect world, there would be no need for an X-Force. We’re not there…yet.

CHRISTOPHER: I was in shock with the first issue and I am craving to find out what happens next!

ROBOT OVERLORD: THAT IS A LOT OF COMIC TO READ ON THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND! WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO?
