IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

BATMAN WHITE KNIGHT PRESENTS VON FREEZE #1
    Written by: Sean Murphy
    Art by: Klaus Janson
    Cover Art by: Sean Murphy
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $5.99
SOLICITATION: The world of Batman: White Knight expands with this standalone tale! On the night of Bruce Wayne’s traumatic birth, Victor Fries must intervene to save the lives of Martha Wayne and the future Batman. As the evening unfolds, Victor distracts Thomas with the incredible tale of his own father figures-one a Nazi, the other a Jew-and their complex connection to Wayne Laboratories. As the Third Reich roars into power, the deep friendship and working relationship between the Baron von Fries and his research partner, Jacob Smithstein, is in crisis. Ordered by Himmler to speed development of their cryotechnology in service of world domination, Smithstein is forced to go into hiding and compromise his moral code in order to save his wife and infant daughter, Nora, from persecution and certain death. When the S.S. ramps up surveillance over the project, young Victor begins to question his father’s true allegiance. Both families are driven toward an impossible choice and a sinister standoff, and Victor makes a pact with Smithstein that will ripple through generations.

WAYNE: I’ve really enjoyed the Batman: White Knight books, and I’m a big fan of Mister Freeze these days, so I’m anxious to see this book! Should be different and fascinating!

BIG HERO 6: THE SERIES #1
    Writer: Hannah Blumenriche, Joe Carmagna
    Artist: Nicoletta Baldari
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Hiro, Honey Lemon, Wasabi and Go Go are all off on a class trip for the day-leaving Fred at home to defend San Fransokyo! He’d better come up with a strategy, just in case-and what better way to do that than by writing his very own Big Hero 6 comic book! Join Hiro, Wasabi, Fred, Go Go, Honey Lemon and Baymax for new adventures, new friends, and new adversaries as the Big Hero 6 team continues to fight to protect San Fransokyo!

MATTHEW: If I were at Marvel editorial, I’d be worried that this book has been outsourced to another publisher, but it’s a long-overdue comic that I am looking forward to reading.

    CANTO #6
    Writer: David M. Booher
    Artist: Drew Zucker
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The blockbuster finale to Canto’s first epic quest is here and… there’s no place like home! Atop the Emerald Tower, Canto faces the Shrouded Man to demand his beloved’s heart. Having finally made it to the end of his journey, will Canto learn the truth behind his people’s captivity? Can he battle the Shrouded Man… and survive to return home to tell the tale?

CHRISTOPHER: I’m looking forward to seeing what happens to our small honorable protagonist. I’ve fallen for this hero. I want to see him succeed in his quest and I want to cry with him if he fails.

    ICE CREAM MAN #16
    Writer: W. Maxwell Prince
    Artist: Martin Morrazzo
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Whatever you do, do NOT read your daughter’s diary.

MATTHEW: This book is such a guilty pleasure for me, and every time it irritates or disappoints me, it pulls me right back in with a palindrome or a crossword or some myth-building that fascinates me.

    THE IMMORTAL HULK #27
    Written by: Al Ewing
    Art by: Joe Bennett
    Cover Art by: Alex Ross
    Publisher: Marvel
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION:
    • Some monsters are born from gamma… other monsters worship a different kind of green.
    •  In his war on the human world, the Immortal Hulk is taking the fight to its lords and masters – the Roxxon Corporation.
    •  But when you mess with THE MINOTAUR… you get the horns.
    Parental Advisory

WAYNE: I only buy a few Marvels these days, and this is one of them! When the book started, it was pretty intense and scary. I’m hoping this book will be less Galactus and more Dracula!

    MARVEL ACTION BLACK PANTHER #6
    Writer: Vita Ayala
    Artist: Arianna Florean
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION
When one of Shuri’s inventions falls into the wrong hands, she and Black Panther must race against time before the machine can be used as a weapon against all of humanity!

Rising stars Vita Ayala and Arianna Florean conclude their story arc!

STACY: This is a good book. The last several issues are loosely tied together, and it has been great seeing Vita Ayala and Arianna Florean team-up creatively. Hopefully there is enough interest to bring them back and continue the great work.

    ONCE & FUTURE #4
    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Artist: Dan Mora
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Gran’s monster hunting wasn’t the only thing she kept from Duncan. He’s about to discover more of the family secrets, and the sacrifices one must make to reach the Holy Grail.

INGRID: I’ve been enjoying this book so much. King Arthur has returned to England, and he is not what most people have been expecting. Duncan’s Gran tries to stay one step ahead of the villains, and every issue is full of surprises. Duncan as well as his girlfriend have been dragged along with hardly a minute to think about what they’re doing. It’s action-packed and full of fun!

THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE #1
    Writer: Jeff Lemire
    Artist: Bill Sienkiewicz
    Publisher: DC Comics/Black Label
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: For years, Vic Sage has worn the faceless mask of the Question to clean up the streets of Hub City by sheer force of will. He knows right from wrong. He knows black from white. But what happens when he is drawn into a conspiracy that reaches from the heights of Hub City power to the depths of its underground tunnels? What happens when things stop being black-and-white and start getting a little gray? And what happens when, in a secret chamber deep beneath the city, Vic Sage meets his own end…and his new beginning?

MATTHEW: I’m looking forward to more Vic Sage, especially given the mess they made of his New 52 incarnation. Plus, Sienkiewicz art is worth the price of admission by itself.

    RAI #1
    Writer: Dan Abnett
    Artist: Juan Jose Ryp
    Publisher: Valiant Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Welcome to the 41st century: New worlds, new characters, new adventures.

Valiant’s critically celebrated cyborg ronin named Rai embarks on a thrilling quest to save the future.

Multiple New York Times bestselling and award-winning writer Dan Abnett (Guardians of the Galaxy) joins forces with breathtaking artist Juan José Ryp (X-O MANOWAR) to begin the essential sci-fi series of the next two thousand years!

CHRISTOPHER: Something about mixing mysticism and technology has always been an interest of mine. Rai fits that interest perfectly and am excited to see what new stories will be given to this title character.

    ROKU #2
    Writer: Cullen Bunn
    Artist: Ramon Bachs
    Publisher: Valiant Entertainment LLC
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION:
In order to save a life, the lethal weapon Roku is going to have to kill a lot of people. The first appearance of the Minister of Blades!

The bloody thrill ride reaches new heights by New York Times bestselling writer Cullen Bunn (Venom) and stunning artist Ramon F. Bachs (Detective Comics)!!

STACY: Picked it up blindly and was taken with the imaginative narrative and was blown away by the art. Cullen Bunn can practically do no wrong, and this one is just plain action packed.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #3
    Written by: James Tynion IV
    Art by: Werther Dell’Edera
    Cover Art by: Werther Dell’Edera
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Things in Archer’s Peak are only growing worse. Erica Slaughter is on the hunt, but the children are still dying. Angry and afraid, the inhabitants turn their suspicions on the stranger in their midst, the woman who arrived just as the killings began. Will Erica be able to save the town, or will the very people she is trying to protect turn on her?

WAYNE: Mr. Tynion is one of the best writers in comics today. He can make us care about characters right away, and with this comic’s weird danger and a teenage girl bent on stopping the thing behind it, it’s tough to put this book down! Great read, excellent characters, fascinating plot! I have to know what’s going to happen! I just do!

    THE WEATHERMAN VOL. 2 #5
    Writer: Jody LeHeup
    Artist: Nathan Fox
    Publisher: Image Comics, Inc.
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The stakes couldn’t be higher as Kestrel closes in for the kill! Sentenced to death in the ruins of New York City, our heroes fight for their lives against an onslaught of viral terrors. Can they recover the key to saving humanity? And will they survive long enough to use it? Don’t miss the thrilling penultimate issue of the summer’s most talked about sci-fi saga—THE WEATHERMAN VOL. 2!

INGRID: You guys, this story keeps getting bigger and bigger! The suspense is terrific, the plot keeps you on your toes, and the art is as energetic as the story. This sci-fi thriller is kicked up to eleven. I am both excited to see what happens next, and sure I’ll be at least a little horrified by it.
