IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    AGENTS OF ATLAS #2
    Writer: Greg Pak
    Art: Nico Leon
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Through stunning science-magic teleportation tech, the visionary named ISAAC IKEDA has connected slices of neighborhoods from a dozen different Asian cities into the cross-Asian portal city of Pan. Is this new utopia a glorious pan-Asian multicultural dreamworld, free trade mecca, and tourism experience? Or is it a violation of hundreds of local and international laws, a magnet for monsters and maniacs, and a dangerous social experiment about to explode? AMADEUS CHO and the AGENTS OF ATLAS, as Pan’s new protectors, are about to find out! Also: Love is in the air! Which two Agents are about to melt the ice?

CHRISTOPHER: I am interested to see how they handle the proposed love story and the Asian cultural influences of the city of Pan. Looking forward to seeing what they do.

    DIE #07
    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Artist: Stephanie Hans
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: SPLIT THE PARTY,” Part Two The rest of our heroes have to march the survivors of Glass Town across the featureless Expanse, led by contrite Isabelle and never-contrite-in-his-whole-life Chuck. But is there more than meets the eye here? Like a secret door? Or a soul?

CHRISTOPHER: This has been a great series filled with intrigue, mystery, tension, and fantasy. A guaranteed pick up from me.

STEPHEN: I get what’s going on, and though my interest is on the vertex at the moment, I’m still picking this up, and I think those of you who are big fans of the history of role playing games will get a kick out of this as well.

    LEGION OF SUPERHEROES: MILLENNIUM
    Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Jim Lee, Dustin Nguyen, Andrea Sorrentino, Andre Araujo, Others
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Brought to you by some of comics’ greatest talents, this epic story spans the course of 1,000 years and, for the very first time, connects all of DC’s future timelines! Starring the unlikeliest of DC heroes as she learns to cope with newfound immortality and roams through the disparate societies of Batman Beyond, Kamandi and Tommy Tomorrow, wrestling with her own inner demons and desperately trying to find her purpose in an ever-changing world. Do not miss this truly unique take on tomorrow’s DC Universe, all leading up to a special launch on the millennium!

JONATHAN: The Legion of Super Heroes has always been a bit intimidating to me and I’m not sure if this is the jumping on point that I’m really hoping it is, but I like Batman Beyond and Kamandi and I want to see if Brian Michael Bendis can actually pull off what is being promised in the solicitation, so I’m on board so far.

STEPHEN: I co-host a show called The Legion Clubhouse that is all about the Legion of Super-Heroes – how can I NOT want to read and recommend this book?

    LOIS LANE #3
    Writer: Greg Rucka
    Artist: Mike Perkins
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Jon Kent surprises his mother with a visit to her hideout in Chicago with big news that ties directly into the events of SUPERMAN #15, also on sale this month. While Lois must deal with her now-17-year-old son making life-changing decisions, the two Questions-Renee Montoya and Vic Sage-try to understand their own confusing continuity.

INGRID: This maxi-series is off to such a good start. It isn’t always easy being in a relationship with Superman, nor to live your own life without being overshadowed by him. Danger, thrills, humor, and romance are all on the table, and I’m looking forward to this one.

    PRETTY DEADLY: THE RAT #1
    Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
    Artist: Emma Rios
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: KELLY SUE DeCONNICK (BITCH PLANET, Captain Marvel) and EMMA R OS (MIRROR, I.D.) begin a new chapter in the dark and deadly golden era of Hollywood.

MATTHEW: It seems like a lifetime ago that this book started, but I remember it fondly and hope that they capture the magic once more in the new setting.

    SECTION ZERO #6
    Writer: Karl Kesel
    Artist: Tom Grummett, Karl Kesel
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “RING OF FIRE” This action-packed finale has it all: death, destruction, the greatest sacrifice of all-even the Mall of America! KARL KESEL (Harley Quinn, Superboy) and TOM GRUMMETT (The Death of Superman, Superboy) go all-out in this action-packed last issue!

MATTHEW: You young’ns might not remember it, but Section Zero originally came out in 2000, meaning we’re gonna finally get an ending to a story 20 years in the making!

    SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN
    Writer: James Tynion IV
    Art: Werther Dell’Edera
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION:
    * GLAAD Award-winning writer James Tynion IV (Memetic, Batman: Detective Comics) teams with artist Werther Dell’Edera (Briggs Land) for an all-new limited series about staring into the abyss to find your worst fears staring back.
    * When the children of Archer’s Peak begin to go missing, everything seems hopeless. Most children never return, but the ones that do have terrible stories-impossible stories of terrifying creatures that live in the shadows.
    * Their only hope of finding and eliminating the threat is the arrival of a mysterious stranger, one who believes the children and claims to see what they can see.
    * Her name is Erica Slaughter. She kills monsters. That is all she does, and she bears the cost because it MUST be done

INGRID: If you like horror that mixes literal horrific creatures along with some very real fears of adolescence – such as not being believed even when you’re telling the truth. Powerful metaphors and rich character portrayals meet in this grim but enthralling tale.

JONATHAN: I’m only familiar with James Tynion’s DC work. But, he’s one of only a small handful of writers that have made me interested in Batman. I’m really excited to see what he does away from capes, cowls, and decades of established canon.

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #45
    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Artist: Jamie McKelvie
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: SERIES FINALE! “OKAY,” Conclusion: Thanks for reading. We’ll miss you.

MATTHEW: I’m sad that it’s over, but I desperately want to read how it ends.
