Major Spoilers Staff Picks for August 7 2019 #NCBD

Robot OverlordBy Robot OverlordAugust 7, 20196 Mins Read

IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    AGENTS OF ATLAS #1
    Writer: Greg Pak, Jeff Parker
    Artist: Carlo Pagulayan, Nico Leon
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $5.99
SOLICITATION: PROTECTING EVERY CORNER OF THE MARVEL U.!

By popular demand, ATLAS debut in their own series as AMADEUS CHO, SILK, SHANG-CHI, WAVE, JIMMY WOO and all your favorites defend the cross-Asian portal city of Pan against the science-magic threat of one of Marvel’s classic villains! Classic science-magic super hero fun combined with young and old heroes from multiple lands clashing with one another, fighting monsters and maybe saving the world along the way! And who is ISAAC IKEDA, the Protector of Pan? PLUS: Where are the original AGENTS OF ATLAS? Namora, M-11, Gorilla Man and Marvel Boy in an all-new top-secret mission!

CHRISTOPHER: I am unfamiliar with this particular book title but was struck that the new team are all heroes of Asian descent. I’m curious to see what the book does with these characters and if this series will ring favorably to readers. I’ve enjoyed Greg Pak’s work on Ronin Island and expect great things here.

MATTHEW: I will always buy Agents of Atlas.

    And you should, too.

    BERSERKER UNBOUND #1
    Writer: Jeff Lemire
    Artist: Mike Deodato, Frank Martin
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A merciless sword and sorcery warrior finds himself blasted through a wormhole to a modern-day metropolis where he must protect those around him from an evil wizard determined to send him to hell. From the Eisner Award-winning team of Jeff Lemire, Mike Deodato Jr., and Frank Martin comes this urban warrior fantasy series!

STACY: Berserker Unbound has a feeling of familiarity, but it is a familiarity bred from a love of a genre. This opening salvo looks to be good bloody fun.

    DAREDEVIL #9
    Writer: Chip Zdarsky
    Art: Lalit Kumar Sharma
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION:
    • There’s a new DAREDEVIL in town, and Matt Murdock has no idea who it is!
    • Neither does Cole North, the tough-as-nails detective who’s been hot on the Guardian Devil’s trail for weeks.
    • Can Matt Murdock truly live a life without Daredevil? Can Cole?
    Rated T+

JONATHAN: Daredevil has been one of the most consistent books in Marvel’s lineup for years. It’s not always mind-blowing but it rarely dips into “bad” territory. It’s been especially good when the writers really play up DD’s crisis’ of faith, in God and in himself. So, with ramifications from Charles Soule’s run still in play, this seems like a pretty good time to check in on ol’ Matt Murdock.

    DEATH-DEFYING DEVIL #1
    Writer: Gail Simone
    Artist: Walter Geovani
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Winslow House is in shambles, but people call it home. It is a place for people who have almost nothing but are trying to make a life for themselves. It is also in a bad neighborhood, and no one will stop criminals from tormenting the residents…until The Death-Defying Devil shows up! But when the Devil tries to step in and protect the innocent, things take a turn for the worse and he finds himself trapped inside the house, being taken care of by the same people he was trying to save.

MATTHEW: The artist formerly known as Daredevil has one of the classic comic costumes and this creative team has done amazing work together on previous Dynamite titles. What’s not to love?

    DIE #6
    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Artist: Stephanie Hans
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “SPLIT THE PARTY,” Part One: Forget escaping Die-half of our heroes can’t even escape the remains of shattered Glass Town. Is there any way out? Of course there is. It’s just whether or not you can pay the price. Jump aboard the commercial smash series here!

MATTHEW: Die is wildly creative and really good-looking. It’s a must-have for anyone who is a fan of both comics and RPGs.

    DRAGONSBLOOD #4 (of 4)
    Writer: Nick Bermel
    Artist: Jason Muhr
    Publisher: Zenescope Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION
Riding high after their sound defeat of Bloodaxe, Sigurd and Freya accept Ivar’s challenge to meet his army in battle. As Sig’s condition worsens, however, his confidence in himself begins to wane. Dark secrets, shocking revelations, sinister magic, and more await in the jaw-dropping conclusion of Dragonsblood: The Legend of Sigurd!

STACY: Dragonsblood has been one of those must grab titles. The conclusion sounds like it is going to be incredible, and it’s well worth your time.

H.G. WELLS’ THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU#1 (of 2)
    Writer: Ted Adams, Gabriel Rodriguez
    Artist: Gabriel Rodriguez
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: IDW founder and DIABLO HOUSE writer/co-creator Ted Adams joins LOCKE & KEY artist/co-creator Gabriel Rodríguez to present an all-new adaptation of H.G. Wells’ classic science fiction novel. As relevant today as when Wells wrote it in 1896, THE ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU addresses the question all scientists should ask themselves: “Just because we can do something, does that mean we should?” This bold adaptation gives us a new protagonist in the form of Ellen Prendick, whose point of view shines a new light upon the horrific events on the cursed island, providing unique insights into one of the world’s favorite stories.

CHRISTOPHER: H.G. Wells is a favorite author of mine but sometimes these older books are overlooked by the younger generation. I love new adaptations because it tells these great pieces of fiction to a new reader. Look forward to checking this out.

STACY: The Island of Dr. Moreau is a classic, and seeing someone tackle it in this way makes me excited to pick it up.

    LOIS LANE #2
    Writer: Greg Rucka
    Artist: Mike Perkins
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Famed writer and reporter Lois Lane never worries about speaking truth to power—so what’s she hiding from the most powerful man on the planet (and her husband), Superman? Investigating a widening international conspiracy, Lois puts herself in the crosshairs with backup from an unlikely new ally from the streets of Gotham City.

INGRID: Putting the investigation into investigative reporter, Lois Lane is a terrific character, and this 12-issue series has started off with a bang and Lois at her gutsy best. Tense and topical, this is a top-notch thriller that I cannot wait to dig into!

    RONIN ISLAND #5
    Writer: Greg Pak
    Artist: Giannis Milonogiannis
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Hana finds herself facing unexpected challenges as a new leader in the Shogun’s army, and Kenichi begins to make the perilous journey back to the island…alone.

INGRID: Not only is the Shogun not what Kenichi and Hana expected, he has been turning people into monsters. Kenichi and Hana have parted ways, so each of them is facing new perils alone. This is a terrific and epic story with a deep cultural background and strong characters who are a pleasure to follow on their adventures.
