IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    FAIRLADY #3
    Writer: Brian Schirmer
    Artist: Claudia Balboni
    Publisher: Image Comics, Inc.
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: When her client turns up dead, Fairlady Jenner Faulds thinks her biggest task will be figuring out whodunnit. Instead, she learns that the client was an imposter, that the assassin(s) might still be after the real guy, and that she might yet have a bigger role to play.

INGRID: I am loving this book so far. I enjoy mysteries of all types, and the blend individual case stories and a fantasy world really gives this one a cool touch.

GO GO POWER RANGERS FOREVER RANGERS #1
    Writer: Ryan Parrott
    Artist: Eleonora Carlini, Francesco Mortarino
    Publisher: BOOM! STUDIOS
    Cover Price: $.99
SOLICITATION: Everything in Go Go Power Rangers has been leading to THIS MOMENT! Don’t miss the epic conclusion as The Power Rangers face off against Alpha 1 and the reveal of Rita’s true plan; a familiar newcomer whose arrival in Angel Grove will change everything.

MATTHEW: BOOM!’s take on the Rangers is a huge success creatively, and it’s good comics even if you don’t like the Power Rangers. With a big new era on the horizon, this book could be your coveted Jumping-On Point™!

    INVISIBLE KINGDOM #4
    Writer: G. Willow Wilson
    Artist: Christian Ward
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Suddenly, Vess is the Sundog’s unlikely new crewmember, and Grix is at the forefront of an unexpected battle—but their earth-shattering discovery won’t shake their faith or ferocity. They’re unquestionably in this together . . . but who will help them? And how much time is left before Vess and the Sundog are captured . . . or worse?

INGRID: Two very unlikely allies have come together over dangerous knowledge about large scale corruption between a powerful corporation and a major religion. Talk about being the underdog in a fight!

RED SONJA AND VAMPIRELLA MEET BETTY AND VERONICA #2
    Writer: Amy Chu
    Artist: Maria Sanapo
    Publisher: Archie Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The body count increases, and the mystery deepens as Vampirella and Red Sonja investigate the deaths plaguing Riverdale High. Turns out American high school life is as mysterious and perplexing as the murders themselves! Meanwhile Betty and Veronica have troubles of their own when they butt heads with the editor of the school newspaper over their investigative news coverage. Is there a coverup afoot?

MATTHEW: Sometimes, a joyfully stupid crossover makes for some big fun. Since Riverdale has already seen The Punisher, The Predator and Cthulhu, why not the She-Devil with a sword and Vampi? I only wish Dan Parent was handling the interiors…

STEPHEN: This is all kinds of weird, and I like it. Archie does a great job of creating some crazy crossovers that actually work, and this issue might just hit that sweet spot for you.

    SUPERMAN YEAR ONE #1
    Writer: Frank Miller
    Artist: Danny Miki/John Romita, Jr.
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: From the burning world of Krypton to the bucolic fields of Kansas, the first chapter of SUPERMAN YEAR ONE tracks Clark Kent’s youth in Kansas, as he comes to terms with his strange powers and struggles to find his place in our world. DC BLACK LABEL is proud to present the definitive origin of Superman as rendered by the legendary comics creators Frank Miller and John Romita Jr.!
    PRESTIGE FORMAT
    MATURE READERS

STEPHEN: Oh man… this book could go either way, but I’m giving this a recommendation only because it is Frank Miller and only because his last Superman tale was a hot mess.

    TONY STARK IRON MAN #13
    Writer: Gail Simone
    Artist: Paolo Villanelli
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The concluding chapter to this special WAR OF THE REALMS story, as Iron Man finds himself struggling against the ancient mystical forces he has the LEAST power to resist. Tony fights an ancient winged calamity AND his own technology with the lives of everyone at STARK UNLIMITED hanging in the balance!

MATTHEW: With Simone back at Marvel, I’ve been chomping at the bit to see her take on some of their big names, and the first part of this story was a hoot. Add in the fact that this recent run on Iron Man has been one of my faves in a while and you’ve got a win/win situation on your hands.
