IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

ARMY OF DARKNESS BUBBA HOTEP #2
    Writer: Scott Duvall
    Artist: Vincenzo Federici
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Last we saw Ash, he was soaring chin-first through a time portal, hot on the bandage of Bubba Ho-Tep, and crash-landed in 70’s Las Vegas! The demonic mummy seeks an ancient Egyptian book of souls and will stop at nothing to possess it! Can Ash put his differences aside with a near-peak condition Elvis long enough to teach this undead thief a lesson? Find out in the Vegas-styled winner-takes-all showdown, where the loser gets his soul sucked out!

STEPHEN: Loved the first issue, and I expect big things to happen when Ash finds himself in the 70s.

    BITTER ROOT #5
Writer: Chuck Brown and David F. Walker
    Artist: Sanford Greene
    Publisher: Image Comics, Inc.
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: As an unspeakable evil ravages New York City, the last of the Sangerye Family fight just to stay alive. But with Cullen missing and presumed dead, hope is fading fast, both for the family, and the fate of humanity.

INGRID: This series has been so excellent, I can hardly begin to describe it. This is the last issue in the current arc, and this tale of the supernatural placed against the Harlem Renaissance is action-packed, interesting, and beautiful to look at. Don’t miss this one!

    FIREFLY: BAD COMPANY #1
    Writer: Josh Lee Gordon
    Artist: Francesco Mortarino, Giuseppe Cafaro
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: In this 40 page celebration, take a look into the never-before-seen history of one of the most beloved
Firefly characters in the ‘Verse-SAFFRON! Journey through the early days of Saffron’s life, from before her
fateful meeting/marriage to Mal. This is an origin story no Firefly fan is sure to forget!

MATTHEW: I’m a little leery of the price tag, but the origins of Yo/Saff/Bridge (especially if they can draw Christina Hendricks as well as the cover image) are a compelling argument to part with 8 bucks.

    NAOMI #3
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker
    Artist: Jamal Campbell
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A brand-new character in the DC Universe comes into focus as Naomi confronts the one person in her small town she is convinced knows the secret of her mysterious adoption and her obsession with Superman. The truth is going to change both her and the DC Universe forever. The secret of Naomi opens the door to an enormous reveal you will not want to miss. This exciting new mystery from the powerhouse creative team of writers Brian Michael Bendis (Jessica Jones, Spider-Man) and David F. Walker (Shaft, Cyborg) and new, amazing art talent Jamal Campbell.

INGRID: This is such an interesting book. Naomi has a mysterious past, and last issue she was confronting someone in town about it. We may get some answers, but I bet we get some surprises. The artwork in this one is beautiful too.

    SPIDER-MAN LIFE STORY #1
    Writer: Chip Zdarsky
    Artist: Mark Bagley
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: In 1962, in AMAZING FANTASY #15, 15-year-old Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider and became the Amazing Spider-Man! Fifty-seven years have passed in the real world since that event – so what would have happened if the same amount of time passed for Peter as well?
A special high-end limited series that’s a part of the celebration of Marvel’s 80th anniversary, SPIDER-MAN: LIFE STORY combines the talents of Chip Zdarsky (SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN, MARVEL 2-IN-ONE) and Mark Bagley (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN) to tell the entire history of Spider-Man from beginning to end, set against the key events of the decades through which he lived!

In this first oversized issue, when Flash Thompson is drafted to serve during the Vietnam War, Spidey must weigh the question of where his responsibility truly lies!

STEPHEN: Yeah, I’m totally down for this. I want to see what kinds of stories Zdarsky and Bagley are coming up with even though we have a history of Spider-Man during this decade.

    STEVEN UNIVERSE #26
    Writer: Terry Blas
    Artist: Gabriele Bagnoli
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Things continue to go from bad to worse as Lars, the Off Colors, Steven, and Connie must brave a turbulent nebula to escape Emerald’s pursuit.

MATTHEW: Lars of The Stars and the Off-Colors are one of the most entertaining (and surprising) turns of Steven Universe’s always surprising run, so I’m psyched for more space opera…

    ZORRO: SWORDS OF HELL #1
    Writer: David Avallone
    Artist: Roy Allen Martinez
    Publisher: American Mythology Presents
    Cover Price: $29.99
SOLICITATION: Celebrate Zorro’s 100th Anniversary with the “Century” editions! Uber-rare and limited to just 100 copies, these are the rarest of Zorro collectibles This slab-worthy issue will be the gem of your graded comics collection. Allocations are likely.

MATTHEW: The solicit has admittedly dampened my excitement a bit, but I’m still ready for Zorro’s big One-Oh-Oh.
