Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Which Witch Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonDecember 5, 20185 Comments1 Min Read

It is a lesser-known TV factoid that Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, did a pilot in the 90s about two witches and their talking cat raising a teenage girl in the sticks, and was pretty irked that it got canned.  To make things worse, ABC launched ‘Sabrina The Teenage Witch’ a couple of years later, raising questions of whether or not her idea was plagiarized and made more wholesome for TGIF.  In fairness, Elvira’s peekaboo sexy schtick might have made a hard sell on network television, but the question of which witch would be more fun is one for the ages, leading to today’s sitcom query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) is torn on this one, as Melissa Joan Hart is amazing, but Elvira is…  Elvira, asking: Which witch would you pick for all your mystical needs: Elvira, Mistress of the Dark or Sabrina, the Teenage Witch?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

Elvira. From what I have seen of the old Sabrina sitcom and the new netflix adaptation I don’t think I would get the results that I would ask for, if it was a witch for hire situation. Plus the Elvira pinball game is a ton of fun.

Elvira. Has more experience, I guess.

Sabrina. I don’t think Elvira is a witch. I thought she was a vamp.

I agree. I never thought she was supposed to be a witch.

She was definitely a witch in her pilot…
