A few days ago, Marvel teased us with the appearance of the Ghost Spider, who in reality is just Spider-Gwen. So why the change?

As some of our awesome Spoilerites pointed out to us, Ghost Spider is the name Spider-Gwen uses on the Marvel Rising: Initiative series, and to keep confusion to a minimum, it was decided to change her name to Ghost Spider.

According to Cort Lane, Marvel Animation executive, “Well, if she was going out and about as Spider-Gwen it would blow her cover. So we all got together with our writers and creative team and took her skills and ability and how she goes around in secret.”

The Spider-Gwen comic book series by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez recently concluded, and when the character reappears in the four-color pages, we expect the name will go with her. Since Marvel has already released the following teaser image, I expect a bigger announcement about her comic book adventures later this week during the Spider-Man panel.

So… synergy and brand cohesiveness seems to be the answer. I’ll be honest with you, I’ll probably keep calling her Spider-Gwen, because I’ll forget…
