IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    ARCHIE MEETS BATMAN ’66 #1
    Writers: Jeff Parker, Michael Moreci
Artists: Dan Parent, J. Bone, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Jack Morelli
    Publisher: Archie Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
Two iconic comic book characters meet up for the FIRST TIME in this historic crossover mini-series! A battle in Gotham City extends its reach into Riverdale—with Mr. Lodge becoming enemy #1 of the dynamic duo! Now it’s up to Veronica to recruit some help and place a call… to the Batcave!

STACY: Fun with a capital POW! A great creative team and an all-ages approach make this book a major pick up. O love the use of classic TV villains with the comic villains, and the Archie gang is going to really turn the Dynamic Duo on their collective heads.

STEPHEN: Ever since the Batman ’66 legal rights were finally settled everyone has been trying to capitalize on the 52-year-old property. This week, the 52-year-old property and the 77-year-old property team for the first time. It’s going to be interesting.

    BATMAN #51
    Writer: Tom King
    Artist: Lee Weeks
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
The honeymoon’s over for Bruce Wayne as Gotham City’s most prominent citizen gets selected for jury duty in a chilling court case involving Mr. Freeze! Freeze claims the charges should be dismissed because Batman used excessive force; cue the outrage and media circus. While doing his civic duty, Wayne’s forced to take a hard look at the Dark Knight’s methods. And hey…what is Dick Grayson doing running around the city dressed as Batman?

STEPHEN: After the events of the last issue, why wouldn’t you want to see what happens next, and how Batman deals with being left at the altar.

    ETHER: THE COPPER GOLEMS #3
    Writer: Matt Kindt
    Artist: David Rubin
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
From New York Times bestselling Mind MGMT creator Matt Kindt and Black Hammers David Rubin comes this fantasy adventure about a science-minded hero intent on keeping the balance between Earth and a magic world!

As Boone Dias and his team get closer to closing the breaches between Ether and Earth, they find themselves pitted against terrifying Spider Golems, AT-AT-sized sphinxes, and living anthropomorphic monster-mummies!

INGRID: Last issue left off with a fight scene. I’m looking forward to more adventure with unexpected twists and clever, colorful art.

    FUTURE QUEST PRESENTS #12
    Writer: Jeff Parker
    Artist: Mauricet
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
We saved the biggest for last: a long-abandoned gene-splicing project created by Dr. Zin has been reactivated, and even the F.E.A.R. agents who brought it back to life can no longer stop it! Who can? How about Buzz Conroy and Frankenstein Jr.!

STACY: Saturday morning goodness for a modern age! I love the re-imagining that the Hanna Barbara superheroes have been receiving. This is a great tale whether you know Frankenstein Jr. or this is your first exposure.

    JUSTICE LEAGUE #4
    Writer: Scott Snyder
    Artist: Jorge Jimenez
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
What is hidden in the darkest depths of the ocean and farthest reaches of space doesn’t even compare to the insidious secrets buried in the pasts of Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter! While the rest of the League battles to save their friends before all of reality unravels, the citizens of Earth make a startling decision…to join the Legion of Doom!

INGRID: Everything starts coming together in this issue. Lex Luthor’s clever planned scheme has divided the Justice League and the Legion of Doom is attacking them on multiple fronts! All this and absolutely luminous art makes it a must read for me.

    NEW CHALLENGERS #3 (of 6)
    Writer: Aaron Gillespie, Scott Snyder
    Artist: Klaus Janson, Andy Kubert
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
It’s the New Challengers versus the Old Challengers! The original Challengers infiltrate Challengers Mountain to uncover the identity of the professor who’s been manipulating both teams! As dark matter leaks from the Dark Multiverse, the New Challengers travel to the prehistoric underworld of Skartaris, stomping grounds of Travis Morgan, the Warlord!

STACY: A sharp, action-packed title with a great high adventure feel and consistent cliffhangers that keeps you coming back. One of my current favorites!

    RAT QUEENS ONE-SHOT: NEON STATIC
    Writer: Kurtis J. Wiebe
    Artist: Will Kirkby
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
Strap yourselves in for a ride to an alternate and futuristic world, where the Rat Queens take to the neon streets of Palisade as an elite team of shadow operatives. An anonymous fiend creeps through the dark web, stealing identities and blackmailing innocent civilians for cold, hard Goldyen—and only the Queens can stop him! A cyberpunk take on the RAT QUEENS from KURTIS J. WIEBE and WILL KIRKBY. – See more at: https://imagecomics.com/comics/releases/rat-queens-special-neon-static-one-shot#sthash.cQjl1aLK.dpuf

STACY: With a genre switch from medieval fantasy to urban fantasy cyberpunk by way of Shadowrun, this book shows the versatility of the characters and their writer. Solid fun! I hope we revisit this style soon.

Sherlock Holmes: The Vanishing Man #3SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE VANISHING MAN #3
    Writers: Leah Moore, John Reppion
    Artist: Julius Ohta
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
Holmes inches closer to solving the disappearance of Michael Williams, but it also brings him closer to danger! Meanwhile, Moriarty’s cunning scheme goes deeper than anyone anticipated, including the neighborhood boy caught in his clutches!

STEPHEN: This is such a good story. Can’t wait to see if Holmes changes his ways (he won’t) and if he’ll catch Moriarty (he won’t). Regardless, the clues are all there, and Leah Moore and John Reppion are know how to tell a good mystery story.

    THE WEATHERMAN #2
    Writer: Jody Leheup
    Artist: Nathan Fox
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
Storm clouds and bounty hunters gather as Agent Cross takes local Martian weatherman and noodle bowl aficionado Nathan Bright to task for his alleged role in murdering the Earth. But Nathan may just be the last hope of preventing a second attack—one that could wipe humanity out for good.

INGRID: This is a serious book, if not downright dark, but after issue #1 I am dying to find out what happens next. To be fair, I’m kind of dreading it too, but I have to know.
