    Question Of The Day

Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Laser Eyes Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonJune 18, 20185 Comments1 Min Read

The thing about Scott Summers and his cursed laser eyes is this: Though they’re his primary power, a lot of other characters have that same ability as part of their power set.  Superman and his imitators (including Hyperion, whose atomic vision became a major plot point in the 1986 ‘Squadron Supreme’ miniseries), cartoon Starfire, even Zok from the Herculoids do something very similar to ol’ Slim’s face blaster.  (And most of them do it without an existential crisis, too.)  And, of course, there is the mighty Lazer Pony who… uh…  It’s complicated, leading to today’s heat-and-or-force-beam query.

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) is leaning towards John Dickering, the Golden Age Archie Comics hero known as The Comet, whose eye lasers are full-on disintegration beams, asking: What fictional character has the greatest laser eyes of them all?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

I like Cyclops, but Darkseid’s pack quite a punch. On the other hand, Shockwave could cook fish with his eye beam…
