IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    ANT-MAN AND THE WASP #1
    Writer: Mark Waid
    Artist: Javi Garron
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Wasp was just trying to help Ant-Man get home to Earth to see his daughter…but a little problem got in the way. Very little. Subatomic, in fact, as Scott Lang was lost in the vast spaces between atoms! Now, Nadia is his only hope of rescue…if only he would listen long enough for her to save them! From master storyteller Mark Waid (CAPTAIN AMERICA, CHAMPIONS) and Marvel Young Gun artist Javier Garrón (SECRET WARRIORS, STAR-LORD) comes a story of a big journey getting smaller all the time!

MATTHEW: So, I’m looking forward to the big movie and I’m a little bemused at how hard they have to work to put this team together in the comics. Still, it’s Waid and Garron and the new Wasp is a hoot.

    Archie #31ARCHIE #31
    Writers: Mark Waid, Ian Flynn
Artists: Audrey Mok, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Jack Morelli
    Publisher: Archie Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99 U.S.
SOLICITATION: Break-ups, hook-ups, Archie on the guitar again, and the Bee drops a huge announcement! Add to this the threat of the Blossom Twins’ real father, and peril is everywhere as this arc races towards its game-changing conclusion!

INGRID: Mark Waid’s run on this has been fantastic, and I keep wanting to find out where he’s taking us next.

STEPHEN: If you thought the car crash was shocking, what happens when an ex-con father shows up to the school dance with a loaded weapon? Oh, man, this is going to be intense!

    DAZZLER: X-SONG #1
    Writer: Magdalene Visaggio
    Artist: Laura Braga
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    SOLICITATION: DAZZLER ROCKS ON!

The Brooklyn punk scene has never been cooler with DAZZLER’s new band taking center stage. But while she’s trying to find herself and reconnect to the one thing she’s always loved, Dazzler stumbles upon a truly toxic part of the underground punk scene. When a new and violent gang threatens the young Inhuman fans that follow her from venue to venue, Dazzler may have to turn to her own past to provide some guidance–and butt kicking.

MATTHEW: I enjoy Visaggio’s previous works like Eternity Girl, and this take on Dazzler seems like a fun one. I’m in…

    JUSTICE LEAGUE #1
    Writer: Scott Snyder
    Artist: Mark Morales
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “THE TOTALITY” part one! A brand-new era begins here! Comics legends Scott Snyder and Jim Cheung launch the Justice League into a cosmos-shaking mystery that will draw out their most terrible foes…in ways our heroes couldn’t possibly imagine! In this debut issue, Martian Manhunter struggles to protect the team from an incoming threat that will shatter the world as they know it, while a familiar face strikes out on a dark path…

MATTHEW: I’m a sucker for a big new start for the League, and Scott Snyder is a name I keep hearing as doing the best Batman evvvarrrrr… Still bummed about the teams from ‘No Justice’ being temporary, but I’m cautiously optimistic about this one.

Sherlock Holmes: The Vanishing Man #2SHERLOCK HOLMES VANISHING MAN #2
    Writers: Leah Moore, John Reppion
    Artist: Julius Ohta
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Holmes and Watson continue their search for Michael Williams, only to discover they are not the only people doing so. Are the mysterious figures trailing the detectives responsible for Michael’s disappearance? Meanwhile, Moriarty’s reappearance puts someone close to the sleuths in mortal danger!

STEPHEN: This may be the best Sherlock Holmes story the team has written to date! So many unexpected moments, a good sense of humor, and the question that is begging to be answered – WHY IS MICHAEL WILLIAMS VANISHING!? If you love Sherlock Holmes this is a great book to pick up this week.

Sword Daughter #1 ReviewSWORD DAUGHTER #1
    Writer: Brian Wood
    Artist: Mack Chater, Jose Villarrubia
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: In Sword Daughter, the Forty Swords arrive at night and, under the cover of darkness, murder an entire village. Only two people survive the slaughter: the infant Elsbeth and her grief-stricken father, Dag. Setting off on a revenge quest that will span the width of Viking Age Europe, they find the key to repairing their damaged relationship lies in the swords they carry.

STACY: As I said when I reviewed this book earlier this week, it has shades of Lone Wolf and Cub, but the soul of Leon: The Professional. Good start to what should be a great journey.

    Valiant High #2VALIANT HIGH #2
    Writer: Daniel Kibblesmith
    Artist: Derek Charm
    Publisher: Valiant Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Class is in session as Valiant’s all-ages escapade escalates!

As Valiant Universe’s best and brightest young minds know all too well, Valiant High isn’t your average everyday high school… It’s the kind of place where dodgeball is a literal blood sport and trying to find a date to homecoming can be just as stressful as saving the world! But deep within the hero-filled halls of this otherwise prestigious institute, Principal Harada is hiding a mysterious secret…and Valiant High’s newest foreign exchange student, Colin “Ninjak” King, is ready to seek out the truth – once he’s done giving omega-level nerd Peter Stanchek a cool-kid makeover first, of course!

Get ready for second period as rising star Daniel Kibblesmith (QUANTUM AND WOODY!, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert) and Eisner Award-winning artist Derek Charm (Jughead) detail another hysterical day in the life of the world’s most talented teenagers, in an incredible all-ages adventure set outside of Valiant’s standard superhero continuity!

STACY: A great book that is effortlessly fitting the characters of the Valiant Universe into high school roles. Great writing and art, it has a story that is mirroring events in the regular series in interesting ways.
