IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    Archie #29ARCHIE #29
    Writers: Mark Waid, Ian Flynn
Artists: Audrey Mok, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Jack Morelli
    Publisher: Archie Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Blossom family secret has erupted, taking all of Riverdale by surprise—and that includes Cheryl and Jason! What’s the truth about their long-lost father?

STEPHEN: The truth about the Blossom’s father revealed? That’s just the tip of the iceberg when Reggie Mantle returns to Riverdale after his stint up the river. Gorgeous art, and a solid story, with a definite solid payoff, can be found in Archie #29 this week. A great read!

    BATMAN #43
    Writer: Tom King
    Artist: Mikel Janin
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Everyone Loves Ivy” part three! The quest to end Ivy’s domination heads toward a close, but can Batman offer Ivy redemption on the other side of this crime? It’s an epic showdown between the Caped Crusader and one of his most popular foes, brought to you by the creative team behind “The War of Jokes and Riddles.”

STEPHEN: Poison Ivy has become a rather tragic character over the last decade, and I like what Tom King is doing in this arc. Batman #43 is a must-read for me this week, and I think you’ll enjoy it, too.

WAYNE: Is Poison Ivy hot these days or what? She’s everywhere and controlling everything! Can’t wait to see what Mr. King has in mind for her this time!

CAVE CARSON HAS AN INTERSTELLAR EYE #1
    Writer: Jonathan Rivera
    Artist: Michael Avon Oeming
    Publisher: Young Animal/DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: After a year of multiverse-hopping and fighting in the Milk Wars, returning to a normal life of digging and cave-diving just isn’t the same for explorer Cave Carson. Sure, he’s got his podcast, family and that cybernetic eye, but reminiscing about times gone by isn’t the same as living. Luckily for Cave Carson and his daughter Chloe, they’re about to get sucked into an all-new adventure-literally-when they go spelunking in a black hole! But what’s caused this black hole to appears and what’s its connection to the intergalactic music sensation Star Adam?

MATTHEW: Phase two of the Young Animal titles has arrived, and since I enjoyed the first phase (and Cave’s series especially), I’m psyched to see the next steps…

    FUTURE QUEST PRESENTS #8
    Writer: Jeff Parker
    Artist: Steve Lieber
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: An alien threatens to pressure the Earth into “joining” a galactic empire…and not voluntarily! The first line of defense…the mighty Mightor! Guest appearances by Jonny Quest and Hadji!

WAYNE: With more DC/Hanna Barbera crossovers coming soon, I’m still enjoying my favorite of the bunch so far! This title is fun and adventure just the way I like it!

    GUERILLAS #4
    Writer: Brahm Revel
    Artist: Brahm Revel
    Publisher: Oni Press
    Cover Price: $19.99
SOLICITATION: Southeast Asia, 1970. A troop of experimental chimpanzee soldiers has escaped from the U.S. Army and into the jungles of Vietnam. Despite being free from their captors, the chimps have continued to do exactly what they were trained to do… kill. But as memories of a time before the war begin to surface, the chimps are forced to question why they are fighting at all. In the thrilling finale to the series, their past finally catches up with them when they come face to face with their most fearsome enemy yet, a vengeance-filled baboon named Adolf.

WAYNE: This series is so creative and fascinating that I’ve been patiently waiting for this volume to come out! I am SO looking forward to reading this terrific book, so I can’t get to my LCS fast enough today!

    INFINITY 8 #1
    Writer: Lewis Trondheim, Zep
    Artist: Dominique Bertall
    Publisher: Lion Forge Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A city-sized space cruiser runs into a field of debris between galaxies, and it is up to the ship’s top eight security agents to figure out how to circumnavigate it. Investigating eight different parallel timelines, the agents uncover multiple plots that together could spell the end of the ship’s massive interspecies population

MATTHEW: Eight arcs featuring the most popular French creators, in the vein of classic Heavy Metal Magazine? I’m in…

    KICK-ASS #2
    Writer: Mark Millar
    Artist: John Romita
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Patience returns from combat to find her husband gone and her neighborhood in ruin. By day, she waits tables and goes to college. By night, she pulls on a mask and becomes Kick-Ass-serving justice to local scumbags and taking a cut of their cash. With every bust, her list of enemies gets longer, and the city’s worst criminals are out for her blood…

MATTHEW: My love/hate relationship with the works of Mark Millar continues, and I’m happy/sad to say that Kick-Ass #1 gave me enough of something new to wonder what more is in store. I’m hoping this one doesn’t go sour as quickly as the new Hit-Girl mini did…

Pathfinder: Spiral of Bones #1PATHFINDER SPIRAL OF BONES #1
Writers: Crystal Frasier (main), Erik Mona (backup)
Artist: Tom Garcia (main), Diego Galindo (backup)
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: As the Pathfinder plunge into the history and mysteries below Kaer Maga—the no-holds-barred ‘City of Strangers’—Valeros plunges far deeper into the great beyond, defending his immortal soul in the courts of the dead! From Pathfinder author Crystal Frasier comes this scintillating tale of life, death, and what lingers when we’re gone.

Bonus: Starfinder backup story! Thousands of years in Pathfinder’s future, the Starfinder Society spreads adventure across the solar system!

STEPHEN: With Pathfinder 2.0 on the way, and Starfinder a growing hit, now seems like a great time to jump on board a new Pathfinder series. AND… because this issue is written by Crystal Frasier, you know it is going to satisfy Pathfinder fans.
