IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    INVINCIBLE #144
    Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artists: Ryan Ottley, Cory Walker, Nathan Fairbairn
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $5.99
SOLICITATION: “THE END OF ALL THINGS,” Conclusion Final issue. Everything since issue one has been building to this. Nothing can prepare you.

STEPHEN: This is it. The end of Invincible. I don’t think I am prepared…

    KICK-ASS #1
    Writer: Mark Millar
    Artist: John Romita
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: KICK-ASS IS BACK-ready to wipe out the city’s criminal lowlives, destroy its gangs, and save its communities from decay. But there’s a new face beneath the old mask, a new figure wearing that famous green and yellow spandex. Who is this new vigilante superhero? Who can fill Dave Lizewski’s shoes? WHO IS THE NEW KICK-ASS? Find out in the first issue of this new, ongoing monthly series. Comic book legends MARK MILLAR and JOHN ROMITA, JR. reunite for the next chapter of the greatest superhero comic of all time.

MATTHEW: It’s weird, the relationship I have with Mark Millar’s comics. I fondly remember the early issues of Kick-Ass, then it went off the rails with Kick-Ass 2. Will this be a return to the good old days or another overblown mess of cynicism and macho? I dunno, but I’m pretty keen to find out…

    LOVECRAFT MYTH OF CTHULHU HC
    Writer: Esteban Maroto
    Artist: Esteban Maroto
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $19.99
SOLICITATION: Illustrated in haunting black and white over 30 years ago, these comics are re-presented in a new edition, adapting three of H.P. Lovecraft’s most famous stories involving the Cthulhu Mythos.

“The Nameless City” is considered the first story of Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, detailing the discovery of an ancient city in the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula built by an unnamed race of reptilian beings. In “The Festival,” a man arrives at the sea town of Kingsport, Massachusetts during Christmas but finds a place eerily empty and centuries out of date. “The Call of Cthulhu” is perhaps Lovecraft’s most famous story, describing a man who, after finding the notes of his granduncle, is lead on a journey around the world in search of a mysterious and disturbing phenomenon.

STEPHEN: This is a totally amazing looking book finally collected for readers for today. Sure, it’s playing off of the Cthulhu popularity, but wow… the art is so darn good. If you are a Cthulhu mythos fan, you should really grab this book today.

NEW SUPER-MAN AND THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF CHINA #20
    Writer: Gene Luen Yang
    Artist: Brent Peeples
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “SEAS OF CHANGE” part one! It’s the dawn of a new era for the Justice League of China! The New Super-Man of China and his teammates have struck out on their own, and even the Ministry’s newly formed Lantern Corps is no match for this renegade force to be reckoned with! But as China’s superhero community reorganizes itself, trouble is brewing in North Korea…and from the depths emerges a new metahuman that will change everything.

MATTHEW: It’s long since stopped being funny to call my favorite titles “the best book you’re not reading”, but in this case the first part is 100% true and the second seems likely. I highly recommend this title in the hopes that it can become a permanent part of DC’s international landscape…

SAINT SEIYA SAINTIA SHO GN VOL 02
    Writer: Chimaki Kuori
    Artist: Chimaki Kuori
    Publisher: SEVEN SEAS ENTERTAINMENT LLC
    Cover Price: $12.99
SOLICITATION: In the wake of a space-wide civil war, instigated by Saga – the Gemini Gold Saint – a new team of Saints comes together with the goal of protecting their goddess Athena. This first all-women team of armored warriors, powered by the Zodiac, will use all their cunning, strength, and compassion to defend their worlds and oppose their very destinies.

RODRIGO: Do you ever come across a book and think “This is something I didn’t even know I needed?” I always felt that ladies got a raw deal in the Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac universe, so I’m glad to see that corrected.

SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE #6
    Writers: Marguerite Bennett, Christina Trujillo
    Artist: Maria Sanapo
    Publisher: DYNAMITE Entertainment
    Cover Price: 3.99
SOLICITATION: The start of a bold new adventure! Mother Forest is beset by a terrible plague that sickens the very jungle, but this deadly evil is not the only danger Sheena must face. A ruthless huntress prowls the forest, seeking a girl with golden hair, and the mark of the jaguar…

RODRIGO: Sheena is a character that has a long, complex and storied legacy in comics… is what I usually scream at people when they raise their eyebrows at my leopard-print bikini girl comic.

    SIDEWAYS #1
    Writer: Dan Didio, Justin Jordan
    Artist: Kenneth Rocafort
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: During the events of DARK NIGHTS: METAL, high school junior Derek James accidentally fell through a rift into the dark matter dimension! Now, as Sideways, he can create rifts in midair to leap through dimensions at will! But with that much power comes great liability-and cracks are starting to form in the fabric of the space-time continuum…

MATTHEW: New Age of DC Heroes has been a mixed bag for me, but this book is one I’m very interested in. He’s not EXACTLY Spider-Man, but… I think he’s Spider-Man! Will this one make the grade?

    XENA #1
    Writer: Meredith Finch
    Artist: Vicente Cifuentes
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: 3.99
SOLICITATION: The path to redemption is never easy, and the journey of a warrior princess seeking to wash the blood of innocents from her hands is no exception. Xena travels to Athens to plead for redemption in the temple of Eleos. but some things can never be forgiven and the shadows of past sins are long. Will Xena find redemption or betrayal waiting for her in the temple of the gods? The power, the passion, the danger… her courage would change the world. Xena: Warrior Princess.

RODRIGO: Yeah, so looking at my picks this week I can see there’s a real pattern. Honestly, though it’s probably Xena’s fault, ever since the show was canceled I’ve been seeking to fill that void of Butt-kicking lady-types in my entertainment.
