The best part of January is the expectations of a new year, all the possible permutations of what might happen.  Will your favorite team will the pennant?  Is show of your choice the new hotness?  Will the movie you’re looking forward to be a blockbuster hit or just a bust?  Anything could happen, even a new group of friends to hang out with, and if they’re super-powered, space-faring or otherwise beyond normal, more’s the better!  Would you join the crew of the Starship Enterprise?  The Mighty Avengers?  Would you become the latest member of the Order Of The Phoenix?  Choosing your new team for the new year is a very difficult proposition, leading us to today’s community query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) would choose the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, even if it meant that I’d end up being Bulk, asking: For the new year, you get to join one fictional assemblage: Which is your new team?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. The Lupinranger team from the upcoming Super Sentai season “Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger” (the Patorangers are a police themed team while the Lupinrangers are a “gentleman thief” themed team). It feels like choosing between my two current favorite Super Sentai teams, with Dekaranger being another police themed team and Gokaiger being a space pirate team, and I’m not so sure I’m cut out to work on the police side of things unless I’m an undercover operative who gets in too deep on the criminal side. Plus, pirates and gentleman thieves are much more cool and mysterious, so there is that. And then there is the top hat motif of the Lupinranger helmet design that looks pretty awesome, even more when considering the idea sounds utterly ridiculous in theory.
