Thanks to the vagaries of rotating holiday schedules, I spent my New Year’s Eve playing video games and going to bed at a decent hour so I could get to work this morning.  In truth, I’ve had worse NYEs, but I started wondering what kind of celebrations our favorite fictional friends might enjoy.  Would Peter Quill be a party animal or that morose guy in the corner talking about his exes?  Would you freeze to death on a building ledge, ringing in another annum with Goliath and the Gargoyles?  Would Charlie Brown and Snoopy even be able to stay up that late?  The possibilities are endless, and only like 80 or 85% of them would be really stupid, leading us to today’s revelatory query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) would like to make it clear that you don’t have to kiss your fictional friend at midnight, just hang out and have a good time, ’cause this isn’t that kind of MS-QOTD, asking: Which fictional character would be your choice to hang out with while ringing in the New Year?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. The Doctor, because then “ringing in the new year” could mean we’re going to some distant future New Years Eve party on some alien planet that gets invaded by robot hamburger people or giant squirrel cats or something. It would be glorious!

  2. It depends on what I’d want from my new year, so I’m going to pick two options for different moods. #1. With Wolverine in some pub in the northern Canada. #2. With Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) playing video games and doing nothing but geek stuff all night.
