IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BATMAN #36
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Clay Mann
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “SUPERFRIENDS” part one! Batman and Superman. For so many years they’ve fought together for justice. Sometimes, they’ve even fought each other. Now, from the creators who broke your heart in “The Ballad of Kite Man” comes a look at how the flaws of each frightens the other and how the hope in each inspires the other. Don’t miss this two-part event that everyone will be talking about as the relationship between these two men is forever changed.
WAYNE: I guess I still remember the old World’s Finest days, so I’m always there when Batman and Superman interact! Should be fun!
BATMAN TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II #1 (OF 6)
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Freddie Williams II
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The team behind the smash-hit crossover series is back to reunite the Dark Knight and the Heroes in a Half-Shell. When Donatello goes looking for a new mentor to help him improve his fighting skills, he opens a doorway to another reality, hoping to summon the Turtles’ one-time ally, Batman. But instead, he gets sent to Gotham City and someone else comes through the open portal-Bane! Suddenly, there’s a new gang boss in New York and he’s out to unite all the other bad guys under him. Can Donnie get back in time and bring Batman with him to help his brothers before Bane causes irreparable destruction? Co-published with IDW.
WAYNE: I enjoyed the first of these series (as well as the animated one, really), so I’m there!
STEPHEN: This is a solid followup to the first TMNT/Batman series, and it looks like it could be a lot of fun. I have one or two little issues with the book, but if you like ninja fighting, pizza eating heroes, and the dark knight, you’ll enjoy this book.
BATMAN WHITE KNIGHT #3 of 8
Writer/Artist: Sean Murphy
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Tragedy strikes, and the Bat-family face the fight of their lives against an army of super-villains and waning public support. A new discovery reinforces Jack’s plot to jeopardize the Dark Knight’s standing in Gotham City, and Harley’s obsession with The Joker reaches a new height-and threatens to change the game for good!
CHRIS: Absolutely loving this book! The art alone was a sell for me, but the story is fantastic too. It reads like a great commentary on fandom and how we sometimes feel like we own the characters. Or it’s just a story about Joker becoming a good guy. Still fun.
STEPHEN: Pay no attention to what the nay-sayers are spouting from their lyin’ lips. Batman White Knight is a good series, and definitely worth your time. The only thing missing from this book is the Elseworlds logo on the cover.
WAYNE: This has really been a fascinating, although twisted, look at the Batman/Joker rivalry. Really enjoying it, so highly recommended!

Rock fights the Nazis on Hanukah, the Teen Titans take on the literal ghost of Christmas past, and Swamp Thing battles that creeping feeling of existential dread! And don’t miss the legendary Denny O’Neil’s return to comics with an all-new Batman story!
MATTHEW: Denny’s back, the holidays are here, and I love a good end-of-the-year special issue. I spell Chanukkah differently, though…
HAWKEYE #13
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Leonardo Romero
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Can L.A. really handle TWO HAWKEYES? Just as Kate reaches out to ask for Clint’s help with finding her dead mother, Clint shows up needing help of his own. An unknown party is gunning for him and it kicks off a chase across Los Angeles with two Hawkeyes trying to stay one step ahead, fully alive, and with minimal property damage…well, okay, with moderate property damage. Re-united and it feels so good!
MATTHEW: Can they recapture the good old days of a couple of years ago? Here’s hoping, as that Hawkeye run was amazing stuff…
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA THE DETROIT ERA OMNIBUS HC

First, Vixen traces the financing for a terrorist group to the African nation of M’Changa, where she must battle a charismatic leader who wants her powers. Then, the team races to the Soviet Union to rescue Superman, Wonder Woman and the Flash, and Amazo returns to find a completely different team! MATTHEW: The internet is lying to you, my friends. The much-maligned Justice League Detroit is actually well ahead of its time, featuring a fascinating line-up of heroes in adventures that paved the way for the modern League. I’m super-psyched to see thie material collected (including Gerry Conways JLA: Classified revisiting of the characters he assembled back in ’84) and highly recommend this one, if you have the itch to read a heapin’ helpin’ of old-school comics.
NO 1 WITH A BULLET #2
Writer: Jacob Semahn
Artist: Jorge Corona
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99

CHRIS: This book is only 2 issues in, but I can tell it’s going to be a hell of a ride. A great comic about social media, fame and our obsession with technology. Highly recommended!
RASPUTIN VOICE OF DRAGON #2
Writer: Mike Mignola, Chris Roberson
Artist: Christopher Mitten
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A seance reveals that Bruttenholm’s mission may be more than he bargained for when the stakes become more dangerous but the enemy only more mysterious.
CHRIS: Full disclosure: I’m mainly recommending this because I know the artist and love his work. Mitten is so well suited for the Hellboy universe it’s unbelievable. The story so far is somewhat standard BPRD affair, but I’m intrigued by where it’s heading.
STEPHEN: I enjoyed the heck out of the first issue, and anyone who is a Hellboy fan will want – nay – NEED to read this series. Can’t wait to see what Mignola, Roberson, and Mitten have in store for us this week!
