IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BATMAN #33
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Joelle Jones
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “A DREAM OF ME” part 1! Following his marriage proposal to Catwoman, Batman leaves Gotham City on a quest of renewal and redemption. As he travels and fights, he encounters members of his family—each disturbed by Batman’s journey, each ready to stand in his way, each ready to push back against Batman’s stubborn determination to evolve into something better than a superhero.
STEPHEN: She said, “Yes” and that brings a whole new dynamic to the Batman and his war on crime. Who will stand by his side, and who will fight against him? It all kicks off this week, and I’m on board for the journey.
LUKE CAGE #166
Writer: David Walker
Artist: Guillermo Ganna
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Carl Lucas went to jail for a crime he didn’t commit and came out a new man: the hero Luke Cage. Now, Luke finds himself on the wrong side of the law and thrown back in prison again. What dark power has caged Luke once more and when the entire world is threatened, how can Luke Cage save everyone from the inside of a jail cell?
MATTHEW: I admit, part of me like seeing the higher numbers return, and a Luke Cage solo series is never a bad thing, especially written by David Walker. I just wish this weren’t another transparent stunt that Marvel with reverse and renumber with a new #1 as soon as the mood strikes…
SHERLOCK FRANKENSTEIN & LEGION OF EVIL #1
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: David Rubin
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Lucy Weber, daughter of the Black Hammer, grew up to become an investigative reporter for the Global Planet. Now she’s on the hunt for the true story about what happened to Spiral City’s superheroes after they defeated Anti-God and saved the world. All answers seem to lie with the dangerous super villain tenants of Spiral City’s infamous asylum. As she gets closer to the truth she uncovers the dark origin stories of some of her father’s greatest foes, and learns how they tie into the puzzle of what happened to Spiral City’s greatest hero.
STEPHEN: How can you not want to read this book? The title alone screams, “BUY ME!” Jeff Lemire has told many a great tale, and I trust that his words will weave a great story in this mini-series. David Rubin brings a dreamy quality to the tale, making this a must read for me this week.
SHIRTLESS BEAR-FIGHTER #5
Writer: Jody LeHeup, Sebastian Girner
Artist: Nil Vendrell
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: This is it! The heart-stopping conclusion to the greatest comic saga of our time. It’s Shirtless vs. Brother Bear in a bear-chested, bear-knuckled fight to the death! Being the angriest man alive has gotten Shirtless far, but can it take him all the way?
MATTHEW: Sometimes, the title is all you need.
WONDER WOMAN/CONAN #2
Writer: Gail Simone
Artist: Aaron Lopresti, Matt Ryan
Publisher: DC Comics/Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Diana has escaped the Cimmerian gladiator’s arena, but she’s exchanged that battleground for an equally dire fate. Now she’s chained to Conan-the warrior who refused to fight-and they’ve been sold to a pirate’s crew! When their ship founders in a storm, a leap into shark-infested waters seems like the safest course…
MATTHEW: I’m a sucker for a strong premise, a mark for a good inexplicable crossover, and a fan of both Simone and Lopresti. What’s not to love?
STEPHEN: I really enjoyed the first issue, because I’m a sucker for the characters and the creators, so it makes sense that this will be on my must read list through the entire mini-series. And, if this goes the way the Batman/Shadow crossover went, then I can’t wait to see what Dark Horse does when they get their turn at these two.
