1) FIRESTAR

Originally appearing in the 1981 cartoon, ‘Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends’, Angelica Jones migrated to the mainstream Marvel Universe first as a solo hero, eventually becoming a core member of the original New Warriors. Though her name and costume imply fiery-powers, like Solarman and Pyroman, her powers are actually something different. Angelica stores ambient energy which she can then manipulate as an aura of microwave energy. (Her ability to sense such signals, including cell-phone and RF energy frequencies, could make her an invaluable superhero in the modern wi-fi era.)

As with any set of like items, these aren’t meant to be hard and fast or absolutely complete, since sometimes what SOUNDS cool is better than what is semantically accurate. After all, who wants to read about “Slightly Above Average Man” and “Really Means Well Woman?”

About Author

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. i’m sad you had Firestar be number one, her Microwave abilities at least set things on fire.
i’d say blackbolt needed to be on the list… that doesn’t “scream” sound powers to me ;)
