IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    BATMAN THE RED DEATH #1
    Writer: Joshua Williamson
    Artist: Carmine Di Giandomenico
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: As the events of DARK NIGHTS: METAL rock the DC Universe, the creatures of the Dark Multiverse stand ready to invade our world! How can even the World’s Greatest Heroes stop a horde of deadly beings that appear to be powerful, nightmare versions of familiar figures? Find out in these special tie-in issues!

CHRIS: I love the Flash. I love villains. I kind of like Batman. This looks like it combines all of those so there is no way this could be bad. Well, it could but I’m really hoping not.

STEPHEN: This should be interesting, especially in light of the evil Batmans that were released last week in Dark Nights: Metal #2. Evil Flash? I can dig it, though the number of evil speedsters running around is starting to wear a bit thin. Stil, you can’t stop the metal!

BUG! THE ADVENTURES OF FORAGER #4
    Writer: Lee Allred
    Artist: Mike Allred
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Bug meets Boston Brand, known more commonly as Deadman, one-time circus performer turned nomadic ghost. Deadman has now become trapped in a robotic body, and Bug’s chase through dimensions and realities may just be the key to breaking the spook out of his tin can.

MATTHEW: I’m really loving this book. It’s one of the best Kirby 100 tributes that DC has put out, even if it’s not “officially” one of them, and the Allreds bring the fun with clever story and way cool art.

    Librarians #1LIBRARIANS #1
    Ariter: Will Pfeifer
    Artist: Rodney Buchemi
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Way back in the swinging ‘70s, movie producer Sol Schick was the guy behind such cheesy classics as “Quarry: Bigfoot!,” Noah’s Ark: Found at Last!” and “Heavenly Visitors from the Hell Above.” But when he’s murdered – at a film festival! – with a piece of Noah’s Ark! – THE LIBRARIANS are drawn into the mystery. Can their combination of special skills, obsessive curiosity and knowledge of forgotten lore figure out who – or what – spelled doom for Schick? And as they delve deeper into his past, is it possible that things are not as they seem and that all his crazy, wild movie…were telling the truth?

STEPHEN: I’ve never watched the television series, but The Librarians always struck me as a kind of Indiana Jones type adventure. For that reason, I’ll pick this book up, and give it a look.

MISTER MIRACLE BY JACK KIRBY TP
    Writer: Jack Kirby
    Artist: Jack Kirby
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $29.99
SOLICITATION: For the first time, DC collects the complete run of Jack Kirby’s MISTER MIRACLE in one stand-alone color volume! Traded as an infant as part of a peace pact between the twin worlds New Genesis and Apokolips, Scott Free grew up in the cruel care of Granny Goodness to become a super escape artist who fights for freedom. Along the way, he battles Darkseid’s forces, including Dr. Bedlam, Kanto the assassin, the Female Furies and more, with the help of his assistant, Oberon, and former Apokoliptean enforcer Big Barda. Collects MISTER MIRACLE #1-18.

CHRIS: This collects what could be some of Kirby’s best work. His Mister Miracle is one of the best New Gods created. I highly recommend people reading this to see how Mister Miracle began. Plus, it’s a good companion to the new Mister Miracle series out now!

    SAMURAI JACK: QUANTUM JACK #1
    Writer: Fabian, Jr. Ranger
    Artist: Warwick J. Cadwell
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A ruthless biker gang ambushes a royal envoy. The name of their leader? SAMURAI JACK! From the team that brought you HELENA CRASH comes an all-new take on the legendary wandering samurai that is completely different and yet surprisingly familiar! Wait, what? How is that even possible? YOU GOTTA READ SAMURAI JACK: QUANTUM JACK TO FIND OUT!

MATTHEW: I suspect this would have been a bigger hit a couple of months ago, when the cartoon’s final season debuted, but I’ll never complain about more Samurai Jack…

    SHIRTLESS BEAR-FIGHTER #4
    Writer: Jody LeHeup, Sebastian Girner
    Artist: Nil Vendrell
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: With his home destroyed and his spirit broken, Shirtless must join forces with a hated enemy if he hopes to rise against Logger and his loyal army of chainsaw-wielding Lumber Louts! Don’t miss the pulse-pounding penultimate issue of SHIRTLESS BEAR-FIGHTER!

MATTHEW: I love this book. It’s wild, weird comics in the best way, with a main character whom you can’t help but love…

    WONDER WOMAN CONAN #1
    Writer: Gail Simone
    Artist: Matt Ryan, Aaron Lopresti
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: What makes one a legend? How do legends carve their names into history, when countless others are forgotten? Wonder Woman and Conan the Barbarian are destined by the fates to be legendary, but when their stories collide, will both emerge victorious, or will the fickle Gods cut their lives short? Co-published with Dark Horse Comics.

STEPHEN: Gail Simone writing more Wonder Woman? Gail Simone taking on Conan? You got your chocolate in my peanut butter this week DC Comics, and Wonder Woman/Conan #1 is on my must read list.
