IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

Action Comics 987 DC Comics Rebirth Mr Oz Effect spoilers preview 1 300x461ACTION COMICS #987
    Writer: Dan Jurgens
    Artist: Viktor Bogdanovic
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “THE OZ EFFECT” part one! The agents of the mysterious Mr. Oz begin to move as the Man of Steel works to stop the chaos they unleash in Metropolis and across the globe. But when Mr. Oz steps from the shadows his identity rocks the Last Son of Krypton to his core. The story that began in DC Universe: Rebirth #1 begins to end here!

STEPHEN: The identity of Mr. Oz is finally revealed this week, and if you listen to the Dueling Review podcast, I kind of let it slip a month or so ago. Regardless, the reveal is going to have a lot of comic book die-hards upset, but in the long run, I think the end result is going to be a good one.

Dark Nights Metal Dark Nights Metal 2 cover Greg CapulloDARK NIGHTS: METAL #2
    Writer: Scott Snyder
    Artist: Jonathan Glapion, Greg Capullo
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: As Superman and Wonder Woman hunt for a missing ally, Batman investigates a mystery spanning centuries. When the World’s Greatest Detective discovers a foe even greater than the Justice League could possibly imagine, will Earth’s heroes be ready?

STEPHEN: The world’s greatest detective gets played, Baby Doomsday makes an appearance, and we are introduced to Batmanium! YOU CAN’T STOP THE METAL! Once again, Snyder and Capullo draw on DC comics from the last 30 years to spin a tale that opens the door to the Dark Multiverse.

    mage2MAGE: THE HERO DENIED #2
    Writer: Matt Wagner
    Artist: Matt Wagner
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Legendary creator MATT WAGNER continues the hotly anticipated third and final volume of his epic fantasy trilogy with MAGE: THE HERO DENIED. Years after readers last saw him, everyman hero Kevin Matchstick has all but abandoned his role as the reincarnated Pendragon, wielder of the mystical weapon Excalibur. But when dark forces reunite to threaten those he loves, he finds he must once again unleash the ancient power that he alone can command. Yet drawing Excalibur brings additional risks by further exposing him to his gathering enemies. Can Kevin stave off the supernatural dangers that pursue him…or will it cost him everything he holds dear?

MATTHEW: HOW DID I MISS ISSUE #1?????

    mister miracle 2MISTER MIRACLE #2
    Writer: Tom King
    Artist: Mitch Gerads
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: What do you do after the most death-defying act of your escape artist career? You go to war, of course! Scott Free has skipped out on his trip to the great beyond and taken a boom tube to New Genesis instead, where he and his wife, Big Barda, take on the invading hordes of Apokolips. Things are a little off, however, and Mister Miracle starts to doubt why he’s fighting when Orion takes over the mantle of Highfather. It’s enough to make a New God miss Granny Goodness’s orphanage!

MATTHEW: Issue #1 was intense in all the right ways, with just enough ambiguity to keep readers off balance, while being incredibly engaging and exciting. I want more of this series…

STEPHEN: Wow… this issue needs to be re-read several times to glean what is going on. There are some really graphic moments involving Granny Goodness in this issue, so be prepared for some vengeful moments happening this week.

    retcon1RETCON #1
    Writer: Matt Nixon
    Artist: Toby Cypress
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The reboot of a comic book miniseries that has never existed begins with an all-new, all-different issue #1! Time to travel back and jump in on this comic while it was new!

MATTHEW: I can’t resist that solicitation copy. Whatever this is sounds like it should be entertaining…
