Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Worst Main Character Edition

    Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonSeptember 9, 2017Updated:September 9, 20173 Comments1 Min Read

After the poorly-received finale of ‘How I Met Your Mother’, I feel like I’m one of the few remaining loyal fans. (Thanks, Victoria!) But even I have to admit that Ted Mosby is the worst, using “fate” as an excuse for terrible behavior and stupid relationship choices and generally being the worst main character.  Otterdisaster calls HIMYM ‘Friends, only Ross is the main character’, and he’s not entirely wrong, leading to today’s protagonistic query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) got pretty tired of self-loathing ‘Flash Season 3’ Barry Allen, too, asking: What otherwise enjoyable show/movie/story has the worst main character?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

I don’t have a definite answer but as far as I have seen, at least half of the sitcoms going on at any given time have terrible main characters. They are usually selfish, unlikable and/or obnoxious in general. Its always the supporting cast that makes any of them watchable.

I will go with Big Bang Theory. Even though the show is hilarious, at least the first five or six seasons, Sheldon would be impossible to deal with.

I might catch some shit for this, but… Supergirl.

I can’t stand Kara, but otherwise really like the show.
