Major Spoilers Question of the Day: The Option of Recasting Edition

    Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonAugust 16, 2017Updated:April 29, 20206 Comments1 Min Read

In terms of actor consistency, we are living in amazing times for movies and TV.  Matt Ryan jumped networks and continued playing Constantine, Robert Downey, Jr. is like eight films deep in his run as Tony Stark, and nobody wants to let poor Kevin Conroy rest.  But it’s important to remember, this hasn’t always been the case: Rosanne had two Beckys, Topanga had multiple dads, and Samantha Stevens famously got a new husband mid-season due to Dick York being badly injured.  Still, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk proves that recasting may not always be a bad thing leading us to today’s query, played by Sarah Chalke…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) wants to remind Faithful Spoilerites that Nathan Fillion does not need to be in everything, asking: Given the option of recasting one character in your favorite pop culture with a new actor, who would you cast?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

      Johnny Depp’s version of Wonka.

I would replace him with Donald Glover. It’s hard to get the right mix of whimsical, childlike, and edgy from any actor, but I think Glover can pull it off.

Neil Patrick Harris might be a good second choice but I’m worried he might push it a bit over the top (his best stuff tends to go slightly over, in my opinion).

Nobody as young Indiana Jones or Han Solo.

I’d put Guy Pearce in as Ares, god of War in the Wonder Woman movie, give him a shield and sword, and have him go toe-to-toe, metal-on-metal with the Amazon Princess. None of that laser beam, telekinesis flying around crap that we got because Remus Lupin couldn’t fight.

Someone with at least minimal acting talent as the Red Ranger in Power Rangers Megaforce. The guy they had was gifted with the acting range of a potato, and a sub-par high school drama student would have been better.

        THANK YOU!

The fact that that hunk of oak is what they chose to be Captain freakin’ Marvelous is a travesty of a farce of a disaster…

The Flash episode Duet should have cast Neil Patrick Harris as the Music Meister. He originated the roll and he has the acting and singing talents to pull off a live action role. The only problem would be he would over shadow the rest of the cast.
