Zach on Film: The Black Hole (1979)

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherAugust 4, 20174 Comments1 Min Read

Is The Black Hole the worst movie of all time, or simply a movie that tried its best, but didn’t have a clear direction?

    THE BLACK HOLE

In the future, a spaceship dubbed the USS Palomino is on its way back to Earth when it discovers another ship that had been assumed missing, the USS Cygnus. Kate McCrae (Yvette Mimieux), a scientist aboard the Palomino, learns that it’s the same ship upon which her father had served as a crew member. When the Palomino’s crew boards the Cygnus, they are met by Dr. Reindhardt (Maximilian Schell) and a bizarre, faceless army who plan to be the first people ever to explore a black hole.

I’m just super happy that you did this one. I’ve been meaning to listen to Zach on Film for awhile now and this finally got me to do so.

I’m with Matthew that is film is still far better than it is given credit for. I do agree there are lots of things that could have been better but there are an awful lot of straight up Star Wars knock offs that make this look like an academy award nominee.

Plus I’ve always got my Good Robot shirt and hoodie a wonderful parody of Abrams’ Bad Robot logo staring Vincent. Thank you Tee Public.

The movie IS an Academy Award nominee (Cinematography, Visual Effects). It was also nominated for a couple Saturn and Hugo awards. It’s nowhere near “the worst movie of all time” and is very underrated.

I hope you give the movie its due in this episode and look forward to hearing Zach’s thoughts and Matthew’s continued defense. I saw this again recently at the New Beverly in LA and it will always be one of my personal favorites.

The Black Hole was one of the films my school had to trot out for end of term and days when the teachers wanted to slack off so I got to watch it 2 or 3 times a year for a while in the 80’s. I can’t honestly say I was ever a fan, it was just too strange and off putting for me.
