    [SDCC’17] DC Universe Rebirth Panel

Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherJuly 21, 20173 Mins Read

Here is a quick rundown of some of the announcements DC Comics made during the DC Universe Rebirth panel at the San Diego Comic Con.

Catwoman will join the Batgirl and The Birds of Prey. This will be part of the Manslaughter arc, where all the men get sic, and every female hero and villain take charge of their respective branches of good and evil. It was hinted that Supergirl and Wonder Woman will also appear in Manslaughter arc.

DC plans to dig into the history of Deacon Blackfire. You know, Deacon Blackfire from Batman: The Cult. Looks like the Birds of Prey will take on the cult leader.

Obviously James Tynion IV has been focusing on Batman’s humanity in Detective Comics, and in an upcoming issue, we’ll find out if Catwoman says yes or no to Batman’s proposal. I’m going to bet the answer is “No.”

While I’m excited to hear that Deacon Blackfire is returning, I’m less excited about the return of Azreal and the Bat-Azreal costume from the ’90s. It brings back so many horrible memories of what ’90s comics were all about. Still, I know many of you love Azreal (Jason), so I’m not going to complain too much about this movie. Tynion said the arc would follow the Order of St. Dumas arriving in Gotham to eliminate the old order, which includes Azreal.

Zatanna will also explore the dangers of knowing to much, and why Batman doesn’t use shortcuts in a world where alien technology and magic exists.

Tim Drake will return in Detective Comics #965 (YES!), and we will learn why Mr. Oz kept him locked up. The title of the story is “The Lonely Place of Living,” an homage to “Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying,” that introduced Tim Drake in 1989. We’ll also find out who else was locked up with our favorite Robin. And because he is/was locked up by Mr. Oz, you can expect part of his story will tie-in to the upcoming Doomsday Clock.

As far as Nightwing goes, look for Tiger Shark to employ actual tiger sharks… hey we don’t write this stuff, this is directly from the mouth of Tim Seeley, who in addition to returning to the Spyral stuff, says he finally understands what makes Blockbuster tick.

Of course you can’t tell a Nightwing tale without some love and romance, and it looks like Seeley has plans to explore the relationship with Huntress in the near future.

Batwoman on the other hand, may have the “sexiest issue of the year” when Margeurite Bennett brings the issue to fans. We will also get to see what Kate Kane did during her missing year after she was kicked out of West Point.

Scarecrow will also appear in an upcoming issue of Batwoman, where Kate will get “Fickle fracked up.”

The future timeline we saw in Batwoman: Rebirth will also come back around in an upcoming arc that will take Batwoman to a “darker place.”

Surprisingly, there was little else discussed outside of the Batman family of titles, which makes me wonder why this panel wasn’t titled DC Rebirth: Batman.

Is there anything that stood out to you that you are looking forward to in the coming months?
